I have this PC windowsXP 3000mhz P4 512ram.. and the system spikes CPU and Memory every so often on a regular basis causing even the smallest of tasks not to function such as typing.. movies and games will even freeze up solid for a few seconds.. I've been trying to figure this out but it seems a mystery.. It happened b4 and I formatted and it went away but after a month its back again.. could it perhaps be faultly hardware?
 
I would bet it is software of some sort. You should check to see if you have spyware or a virus on your computer.
 
If it's XP like you said, can you see which process is using the CPU?
 
I'll check for spyware.. unfortunatly it can't show which process is doing the hogging during the lock up.. but the resource meters do show an increase in memory and cpu as maxed out.
 
Solution: Closed SpySweeper, the very program to protect and serve is the crippler.
 
Just the same, I would run ad-aware, spybot, a virus scan, and CWShredder to make sure that there is nothing bad on your computer (update all of them first).

The way I see it is, something made spysweeper go bad. It may have been something innocent like a inproper shut-down, or it could have been damaged as part of a spyware programs efforts to gain unchecked controll of your pc.
