Can I hook up my PS to my board and power switch and fans and fan controller and fire it up without memory hard drives and cpu installed? I want to do this because I have 5 120mm and 3 80mm fans in my mountain mods U2-UFO CASE. I just want to get all the fans dialed in. Is this ok to do? Thanks Rob

You dont even need to put the board in, just short the green wire on the atx connector to one of the black ones with something, i like a paper clip, and it should fire right up.

But can I do it the way I asked? Or is that a no no? Will I fry something?

I dont actually know, ive never tried it, it would be stupid if it did fry something, but it might not power on at all. I wouldnt try it, or at least try it with an old board to see if it lets any magic smoke out. Why do you need the board hooked up if youre just checking fan speeds/ Want to know what the northbridge fan sounds like or something?

Set the mainboard on a box, plug in a CPU and HSF, VGA and memory and power it up. You can sit there staring at the BIOS all day long if you like. ;)

Actullay I am wondering how loud the sli fan is on the board. But hey if it has never been done, I'm not trying it on my new board. I'll do the easy thing and jumper the PS as previously advised.

So when you say use a paper clip, you mean on the 24 pin connector?

Yep to on the 24 pin connector, green and black wire. Does the sli fan have a standard 3 pin header? If so plug it straight into your psu, youll at least get the max rpm noise.

*NOTE, dont do it if youre not 150% sure the fan runs at 12V, it probably will, but you dont want to burn it out on a brand new board.

Yes, you can do this. The worst case scenario is that the system board is going to beep at you saying "hey stupid, I don't have a video card, cpu, or ram".

But I do this all the time.. to see if a board is able to power up. The beeps, to me, are a good thing. Not much of a test, but, it does tell me if the board is 100% dead, or, if it's dead because of a failed cpu, etc..

Thanks Malogato. I thought this would be ok. I don't have a speaker in the case yet so I don't need to worry about the POST Beeps.

when I build a box first thing I generally do is install the speaker, CPU & HSF in the cardboard box and go for alot of beeps, that way I know I dont have a dead mobo
I then add RAM, Video Card mouse and keyboard and access the BIOS

at which point I tear it apart and mount it in the case and repeat
then I start adding drives and cards (first thing I then do is run memtest86+)

as a proceedure it ensures you you dont get tripped up by problems like thermal cutouts or HSF on the wrong header, mobo shorts ect

you know it was working before and its reasonable to assume it developed a problem when being mounted
