Stupid badge question

But... What's the little arrow and number in the badge- mine is (down)1 on the badge page, but I think it used to be (up)4... Is that a rank / move indicator?

The arrow indicates that you've moved up or down in rank, and the number is how many positions you've moved. I believe it's for the past seven days.

Ah- cool, I figured it was something like that, but it's strange to see how often it moves... With my PPD I figured I was in the 'quiet' neighborhood... ;)

There are quite a few in your points neighborhood that are either not producing or producing very little. You also can have a small cluster of people you pass within a few days. Look at right around 1,400,000. There are a couple just under this mark that you should be able to pass in whatever time period the arrow thing is using. That will give you a +1 one day, then a +2 a couple days later, then back to a plus 1 once the first one clears. If someone mows past you in that time, your arrow number will change even more.

No neighborhood around here is that quiet... :)

I guess I just have to win the giveaway system, so I can see the point count climb dramatically. Or for HP to start giving me the serious parts discount so I can afford something awesome. Hey- hijacking my own thread; is an SR2 system w/ big units (forget the abbrev.) better than a couple of 460's?

Found my own answer- looks like 35k to 50k for an SR2 w/ two good i7's, and about 10k per GPU (heavy on the ~ish, YMMV)

SR-2's can't run I7s. You need dual QPI Xeons for them. Mine should pass 110K ppd when it gets a good work unit (2 hex core L5640s.) With dual quad core Xeons, it would do up to 74K ppd. My GTX 460 with a huge overclock does 11K ppd. So, you would need 7 460's to match a low-end SR-2 machine.

That being said, if you have a spare PCI-e slot or two, 460s are a pretty good buy.

Good info, and thank you! I have not picked up on the Xeon requirement, but I did just read through the thread about the new low voltage chips... I am so curious I might actually give up beer for me, and carbon fiber for my bike just to try some dual quad / hex goodness... Foe serious work, only. :D

It's definitely worth it if you have the funds and even better if you'll also benefit from the extra processing capabilities in other apps.

What CF components are you looking at?

I'm running a M4A785TD-V EVO with a 720 tricore, mildly overclocked...
I would need to get most of teh computer- a 400w power supply would not cover it ;), and I am not entirely sure my HAF922 would even hold the MB... This is not something I'm going to be doing this month, but I'm starting to keep my eyes open around here (and Newegg) for the PS and such to start getting ready. What I hope to do is roll this machine into a smaller case (already on hand) for HTPC use and rig up a fire-breather for folding / school / games.

I just noticed that my MB will support a Phenom II X6, but I don't turn up anything around here, and FAH addict seems to think they are worth about 12K, which would be a much cheaper upgrade.

And I just found this over at tech report- might even deserve its own thread... thoughts anyone?

That would be a very nice upgrade for you. A 1055 is what, $150? 12K is probably assuming some overclocking, but it is definately possible.

Or, do you mean how well the Phenom II X6 stacks up with the Intel chips? The ppd number are calculated very strangely, and take away one of the main benifits of the I7 series Intel chips - with a moderate overclock, they can run bigadv work units and get exponentially more points per day. Still, the X6 Phenoms are good chips. If you have the board already, check them out.

1090T will give 12k at stock - i have seen OC's that will give up to 14k, 1055T is better bang for buck as it can be overclocked just as much and is cheaper. I think mine is great and when it gets retired from folding it will be become my daily rig

Yea- the 1055T looks like a winner... Did you say that's in your farm? I have to admit, I can't imagine not using the best machine I have for my own amusement- you are a better man than I... :p

Ha!

My SR-2 rig does nothing but fold. As does every other SR-2 from what I'm aware of.

Why is that? I mean is it not very good at daily tasks, or do you have enough computer to leave it just folding...

Unless his daily tasks include handling most of Google's search requests or a major banks transactions, I'd like to know what he's doing for a SR-2 setup to not be enough power, lolz.

I'll bet Kendrak has no less than 6 PCs in his house.. but I have a feeling even that's conservative ;).

My SR-2 is going to be my primary desktop as soon as I get a case for it. It should be able to handle Quicken. :)

I don't know...Quicken is a resource hog... :)

I have a dual quad machine, a single hex core machine, and a dual hex core machine running now, and I really don't "use" any of them. The majority of my computing time is on a 4 year old Athlon X2 laptop. Why? because I really don't do anything that needs that much processing power. If I were a hardcore gamer or did something that required a lot of processor power, I would use one of the high end rigs. Or, if any of them were convenient to where I spend most of my time, I would use them. Since they are not, I use the lappy.
