OK.
This should be simple, but it aint.
MB = ASUS Rampage III Formula.

I plugged the Toslink Optical into the spdif on the board.

I loaded the RealTek drivers.

No sound.:mad::mad:

MB on board sound enabled in the BIOS.
Toslink cable, receiver and speakers are known in good working condition.

In control panel RealTek digital audio is enabled and default.

my realtek has a digital audio playback device AND a digital audio (optical) playback device that shows up in Windows.One makes sound and the other does not. Could this be it for you, too?

Correct. But neither, when selected as the default will produce sound.

I'm thinking maybe the SPDIF output doesn't work.

I've uninstalled and re-installed drivers several times, I've disabled and enabled various outputs, but the thing just will not produce sound.

Up until last week I had the same receiver using SPDIF from an evga 790i Ultra with no problems.

I just can't see where the problem is?:mad:
 
Easy test. When you have TOSLINK selescted as default output device the TOSLINK port should be lit up a constant and consistent red to the naked eye, regardless of if/what sound is being played back. If it ain't, you may need an RMA. I have a bad Xonar D2X, where the LED that lights up the TOSLINK port died.
 
Yup.

I looked at the port, I'm not seeing anything specific at the port directly, with the little cover open.

So maybe the Toslink is FUBAR'd??

The board is fine otherwise. I have an older X-Fi Titanium card I'm going to put in, it has SPDIF out also.

Hopefully it will work.;)

Long shot, but check in the BIOS to see if there are more audio controls in there.

The BIOS only has 1) on board sound (enabled) (disabled)
2)SPDIF output..... (spdif) (hdmi) .......for grins I tried both of these, nada.
 
I'm kinda surprised it has those options in the BIOS but I haven't seen BIOSes on many modern motherboards.

Might wanna try updating the BIOS if it isn't already current. See if that kick starts anything.
 
The BIOS is current, and with the exception of onboard sound enabled or disabled has nothing else to do with the sound current or old.;)
 
good thing about digital outputs is they're all the same, so if you can fit your Xfi in there no problem, then that's all that you need.
 
Put in the X-Fi card and now I have sound.

I guess the ob-board SPDIF is FUBAR'd.:mad:

Damn board is only a year old......oh well......glad I had a spare sound card in the drawer.:D
