Stumped: New install Windows screen kills mouse

Just built my new 2600K on an Asus P8Z68-V. Everything working perfectly. I can go into UEFI BIOS and mouse around perfectly. When I let the original Win7 disk start loading Windows I get to the end of the very first Starting Windows animation and my optical mouse red tracking light goes out. Tried two other optical mice. Same thing. Changed the mouse to the other USB port. Same thing. So when I get to the first Win7 window to make the selection of language, etc. there's no friggin' cursor. I've been stuck for two hours and can't make anything happen. WTF????

Another question: Is there any way to go through the Win7 install with keyboard only, as that is working fine. The Next has an underline under the N but I've tried everything to make it go to the next screen and nothing.

Please help as I really have to get this working this weekend. I have to have a bunch of stuff ready for Monday at work! Thanks!
 
Have you tried using any keyboard button (space bar, tab, down arrow) so see if the Windows 7 install allows keyboard-only selections? (Previous versions of Windows enabled you to use keyboard-only "commands.")
 
Tried every key on two different keyboards. It seems that although the keyboard works before the Starting Windows, everything is OFF about half way through the windows animation. The mouse tracking red light goes out and that's the end of that. This is very weird!!!!
 
Did you try using the PS/2 ports (assuming mobo has them) for keyboard or mouse? If I recall, USB could be disabled until OS is loaded. I usually keep the purple and green adapters around as well as an old cheap PS/2 keyboard and mouse. If you connect them to PS/2 while sitting at the "Next" prompt, you should get some movement.
 
No PS/2 on the P8Z68-V unfortunately. I have an old PS/2 keyboard but how can I use it if I have nothing but USB 3.0 ports? This is absolutely crazy! :(
 
lol, I just had a similar battle with my new build. Though, since I didn't re-install windows, I was simply unable to login. Had to use a PS2 KB to login, which allowed me to update drivers, which in turn resulted in the USB mouse being detected. However, once I moved the system from my workbench to its desk, the USB KB wouldn't work. Had to bring the PS2 KB back and try all the different ports before I could get my USB KB working. I was looking for a "USB Keyboard" and "USB Mouse" setting in my BIOS (GA-Z68X-UD3H), but didn't find any (had to be ENABLED in my previous board, GA-P35-DS3R). I've learned my USB KB does not work in the USB3.0 ports, but my mouse does!

You've tried EVERY USB port back there? I'm not sure a PS2 to USB adapter would work for you, as it was always hit or miss with keyboards in my experience.

Try updating the BIOS and looking for some settings in there.
 
Actually, I just fixed it. It's bizarre, but I was googling around on my laptop and found that some people have luck unplugging and replugging their USB devices if Win doesn't recognize them. I did it, and it worked! It's absolutely perfect now in both keyboard and mouse. Thanks to all for the help and this is a good tip to remember: I know I'll be writing this one down for future reference!
 
Oh, I thought you tried that already when you said you tried all the ports, lol. Man, I unplugged/replugged my USB KB half a dozen times into the USB3.0 slot, still never worked, lol. Not like I needed the speed or anything, I just refused to believe a simple KB wouldn't work in a USB3.0 port when the mouse worked perfectly fine.
 
Yeah, I was plugging and replugging but not right at the screen where I was stuck. I always try to avoid unplugging USBs with the PC on. I know that there's no danger, I just like to be extra safe.
