Did we really need another study telling us that drivers on cell phones cause congestion? They also cause indigestion….in other drivers stuck behind them in traffic.

Motorists yakking away, even with handsfree devices, crawl about 2 mph slower on commuter-clogged roads than people not on the phone, and they just don't keep up with the flow of traffic, said study author David Strayer, a psychology professor at the University of Utah.

No surprise here. People don't know how to drive to begin with so they have no business being on the phone. Idiots.

The newest thing I see now is texting and driving. Just in the past week I've seen about 6 or 7 people doing it. At first I thought they were drunk drivers. It's really fun to get right along side of them and honk your horn. :D

2km/h slower on congested roads, and 20km/h slower in the fast lane of an empty highway as well. *sigh*

yes, sit your ass in the fast lane to deter the po-po while i zoom by on the inner-most lane. :D

Nope, you can't pass on the inner lane either because the person in the fast lane is doing the same speed as the one on the inner lane.

You just summed up PA drivers. Even when they're not distracted

This study deserves a "No Duh" award. Hmm, people that are distracted can't do something as well as normal? NO WAI!

some of us live in areas where we're fortunate enough to have more than two lanes! :p

It's unbelieveable how many idiot drivers exist, and then to have them talk on their phones to make things worse....I think police snipers should shoot them in the face for doing it.

Less moron drivers = teh win.

Drivers I hate most are ones who drive the same speed side by side on a 2-lane highway. It's so OBVIOUS they're blocking people behind us but they act like they're not even aware of it.

How can you NOT be aware of a half a ton of metal staying in the corner of your eye at 60 miles per hour??

Oh my god I want one of those. Are they really illegal? I will fucking buy one right now.

You and me both! Forget about causing congestion, these cell phone addicts are dangerous. After having my car,and almost me,totaled by an idiot who was to busy talking on his phone to see a red light,I'm all for banning their use in cars altogether.

I hate cell phone drivers and sunday drivers. They always get in the way when you really need to get somewhere on time. Everytime someone went super slow without any remorse about people behind them were cell phone users. Very self centered if you ask me. People that should get tickets are people that slow down traffic and not too much of the speeders lol.

We in the UK made using a mobile phone in the car illegal a few years ago - take it it's still OK in the US?

I saw recently that the UK now puts people in jail for driving while on the phone.. not just a fine. And if someone is killed while you're on the phone it will be jail for a long time. "Accident" isn't part of the picture then.

Exactly, this should be implemented in the US too. Not just a fine, but jail time or community service, to make these idiots think more. And if you get in an accident, your insurance company should refuse to pay the damages.

Isn't there a distinction between those who have long and completely unimportant random chats about what they're going to do tonight between someone who's on the phone for 30 seconds to answer "Yep, on the way home, see you in a bit." or "What's your addy again?" while coasting through a neighborhood to find someones house?

I think the latter usage is fine (I do it myself), but seeing as there's no way to enforce what you're doing on the phone, I guess total ban is the only way to fly.

It's funny until somone runs the red light like what happened to me. Or when I just about every day encounter somone who loads up the lane, cuts people off, or cause accidents.

I hope they ban cellphones, texting, reading, or any other non-driving related distraction behind the wheel. Seriously.

It's not banned on a federal level. Cellphones while driving laws are left up to local governments. It's banned in Chicago where I work, but not in Chesterton, Indiana where I live.

You know.. Imo i think banning cell phones while driving on a Federal level would possibly be the BEST Federal Law put into place.

I can't stand drivers who wack on the phone... I guess you can call this road rage, but i like to get right behind them, turn my brights on and honk my horn till they do somthing...
it's great having a 8500 LB truck :D people seem to move QUICK.. and get off the phone QUICK..:D

Did the study include elderly? how about soccer moms? how about people too old to be driving? id rather be behind an idiot on a cell phone than a blue hair in a land yacht doing 20mph in the70 mph zone...

Age is something people can't control, but talking on the cellphone is :)

But yes, the ones in their land yachts doing 20mph is also nuts. They do need to up the requirements on testing, thats for sure.

I once saw a person that was eating a bowl of cereal while doing 5 mph under the limit get cut off and brake checked by the enraged driver that had been trapped behind them for a while. This kind of stuff is funnier than anything I've seen on comedy central lately.

eazzzzzy man....it'll be ok.

So you pull in behind somebody doing 3 mph less than you...and it adds 46.482 seconds to your journey. Use the time to FREAKIN' RELAX! sheesh...

ohmmm.....

Hahahahaha, that's hallarious.

You bored or something? Our highways are 65-75 mph in Indiana. I'm not gonna drive 60mph because a couple grandparents and cellphoners won't stop blocking traffic.

(yes, cellphoner is now a word. I just invented it.)

My concentration was in transportation >> and this is why I think the speeding ticket system is flawed. Speeding should be based on a differential from equilibrium speed, not a low design speed for the slowest 10th percentile (idiots, elderly, cell-phone drivers). E.g if it's free flow traffic conditions and the equilibrium speed is 70, then speeding should be say, 85mph. Not the arbitrary value of say, 65 (or 55). This is because drivers deviating from the equilibrium are the most dangerous and destructive to a transportation system. Slow drivers should be punished for their equally disruptive driving patterns.

In my example, that would be driving at 55MPH or lower. E.g. grandma's, idiots with mattresses on their vans, etc. would be punished rightfully so for fucking up our roads. Though moving trucks do get pass, only b/c you know and expect trucks to be slow. However, trucks and heavy vehicles in general are another issue altogether...

If I remember correctly, in Quebec there is a minimum and a maximum speed posted on all the major highways. I wish we had that here. Of course, having it, and having the resources to enforce it are separate issues.

In Michigan we have max/min speed on the highways. There's usually 3 separate signs. One for trucks, one for max speed, one for min speed. Trucks are usually 55mph, max speed is 70mph for cars, and min speed is 45mph.

We have a minimum speed here in Michigan. Doesn't really help since the min is 45 and the max is 70... that's a HUGE gap IMO.

Speed differentials are also the cause of most "speed" related crashes.
One of the more interesting recent studies was conducted on Montana (famous for its one time no speed limit ). During the period of no speed limits the amount of reported automobile crashes on rural roads was reduced by approx 50%. After reinstating the speed limits, the number of accidents increased approx 50%. Causality or correlation, not sure of the underpinnings of the studies.

I would love to see a autobahn style road here... but I am not sure us American's could handle it.

I have seen a kid in a probe almost hit a concrete barrier while texting in DC (I was in a shuttle bus full of traffic engineers - made for good conversations on the way to Dualles aiprort.

Makeup, food, annoying passengers, beautiful lady passengers and radios are probably just as dangerous as cell phones IMHO.

Kudos to a fellow Civil (with Traffic Concentration) Engineer.

I don't suffer from cellphoners too much on my daily drive (Grand Blanc -> Troy, ~45 minutes all I-75), but they're more prevalent on the way home anyways, and they tend to stay out of the left lane (I think the unwritten average is ~85mph for this stretch, I've no complaints about :D ) For some reason, those tools seem to be the same ones who wait until the last minute to merge where it drops from 4 lanes to 3.

I serve on the Technical Coordinating Committee for a local Metorpolitan Planning Orginization that steers our transit system planning. I have to support your contention in your post.

And I think Gallahger had it right. Everyone gets a little suction cup dart gun with a stupid flag on each dart. When you see people doing stupid stuff while driving (talking on a cell phone, riding in the left hand lane, drinking a coke, eating a hotdog and watching porn at the same time) you shoot one of your little stupid darts at their back window. Then when a cop sees a car with 10-20 darts on the back of it, he can automatically give them a ticket for being stupid.

Sounds like a GREAT system to me.
