Stuck troubleshooting a machine - Help needed

Hi,

I've been "given" an Acer desktop to repair by a friend of mine, but i'm having no end of difficulties:

Symptons
Machine fails to boot into Windows Vista ( ~75% of time)
Machine fails to boot into Clonezilla ( Sticks at white screen)
Machine fails to boot into Knoppix 6.2.1

Specs:
Unknown Processor ( Believe intel Core e4600)
2 GB RAM ( 2x 1GB sticks)
nVidia GFX card?
nVidia Mobo.
1 x WD 320 Gb HD

I have done the "usual" troubleshooting steps:
1) Disconnect GFX Card; No Change
2) Disconnect H/D to boot to Live CD - No change
3) remove 1 memory stick - No chnage
4) Swap memory stick - No change

Has anybody got any other ideas?

I'm thinking it's a dead Mobo or PSU, but don't have a spare to try out.

Think i might just declare it dead.

Sounds pretty dead to me, or at least too close to justify the trouble of bringing it back (though I tend to give up easily, at least compared to some around here ). I think you're right, it could be the MB/PSU/Proc or some combination. I'd stick the HD in an enclosure and see what I could grab off it, if anything.

Try a different DVD/CD drive just in case.
