Stuck in 3d Performance Mode

This has been something that has been occurring for sometime now (ever since the 180.xx drivers, maybe before just can't quite remember).

This occurred with SLI and QUAD SLI... always:
-Core 0: Stuck in 3d Performance
-Core 1: Goes to 2d Mode
-Core 2: Goes to 2d Mode (quad, current setup)
-Core 3: Goes to 2d Mode (quad, current setup)

A couple details about my setup:
-Dual Monitors (2 Asus 26inch monitors)
-EVGA x58 SLI (Can see more details by clicking on the link in my sig)

A couple details about my 3d settings:
-Single Display Performance
-4 Alternate Frame Rendering (for quad)
-Max pre-rendered frames 4
-Besides this, everything else is the default settings

So I guess my question is, is this normal? Is there a way to fix this without using rivatuner to manual under-clock it? For some reason, I vaguely remember both cores at one point going back to 2d Mode (when I first got the card in feb 09).

This is always the case? I guess my own memory is flawed then :p

A follow up question. Can i hook a monitor up to each of my video cards then? Or will this not work? I suppose I could just try it and see what happens...

edit:

one more question. you say 3d mode, do you really mean 3d performance mode? Why doesn't it atleast switch to Low 3d Mode? I'm sure there are good reasons, I would just like to get a handle on it.

yup.. friggin annoying.. since im running my 8800GT with such an insane overclock.. dang things using more power then a 9800GTX at full load, while its sitting idle.. but i solved that problem by just running GPUGRID (BOINC DC project).. figured what the hell.. its already using the power.. might as well put it to good use.. :p

yes you can run multiple displays on different cards.. i cant remember which driver version they added that in though.. so just screw with it..

the reason it doesnt switch to 2d mode is that both monitors are sharing the gpu.. so it cant share both monitors in 2d mode.. ive tried screwing with it as well by setting it to single display performance mode but doesnt seem to do anything.. but once i disconnect my left monitor it goes right to 2d mode..

Im using EVGA Precision and its hidden power management functionality to adjust my 2d and 3d clocks automatically with my dual monitors. Theres a sticky posted in the evga forums on how to use it. Heres the link http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=100557040

Only problem is it only lowers my GTX 285 core to 490 which only offers minimal power savings. If it would let me clock it down to 300 it would be perfect. Id rather not have to run it at all but its better than nothing and theres no telling when Nvidia will fix this.

my 260 only goes down to 465 >_> atleast it can now downclock with 2 monitors. its a start!
