would the magnetic field from a 12" sub woofer have any affect on a router? lol i learned not to set tvs next to it ( now i have a screen that only shows purple, was only set next to the sub for 2 min too :p ), but i dont know if it affects routers cause mine is sitting right on top of it

If it isn't shielded it could. I'd be more worried about it effecting the network cables themselves though. If your TV is permanently purple, and it was caused by your sub, I wouldn't put any electronics near it. ;)

what would it do to the cables? its a pretty nice klipsch sub hooked up to my sound system, it was my mistake with the tv, i set it right next to it, touching the sub, as long as stuff is 2 feet away its not affected

EMI: ElectroMagnetic Interference

If unshielded cables are exposed to this (which is being emitted by your sub, it's what turned your TV purple) it can cause degredation in the data transmission, hence slowing down your connection. This is why people don't run network cables next to electrical cables or ballasts if possible. It probably isn't going to hurt your network, but when networking it's a sin to knowingly expose cables to such interference. ;)

From webopedia:
In computer technology, computer devices are susceptible to EMI because electromagnetic fields are a byproduct of passing electricity through a wire. Data lines that have not been properly shielded are susceptible to data corruption by EMI.

most likely no. If your cables were wire coat hangers with ends soldered on you'd still probably be fine.

LOL :D

True, but habbits are hard to break. :p

well woot thats nice, lol all my network cables run right through all my power cords too :p, but its nice to know that everything should be fine, thanks for the replys

More than likely.

Dont try it with a monitor you like though.

Whoa... so if I put my sub next to my monitor, would my monitor go berserk?

It very well could. Speakers have very strong magnets in them. Many speakers are shielded to reduce the amount of EMI they give off, and it probably won't hurt the monitor. It is still a good idea to keep them a few inches away, especially if you have ones that aren't shielded. You'll know if it's a problem because you'll have to degause often.

About your TV..I did the same once, and to fix it, I took the speaker and turned it around oposite to the way it was sitting when it magetized the screen and held up to it. Got to do it just right, if you hold it to long, it will just go the other way and be green I think.

Interesting......

Recently I had the Comcast / cable modem guy out complaining about slow service at times. Of course, it's like going to the doctor; your stomach ache is gone by the time you get there, and in a like manner, the modem always works great when the service tech gets here.

In any event we strike up a conversation, and he looks at my Linksys router sitting right next to the modem - physically touching. "You know", he says, "I had a customer that had nothing but trouble until they moved their router and modem a little distance apart. You could try that...."

So, it was pretty easy to move them 8" or so from each other. Son of a gun....no more issues. It seems there is for sure an interferance issue; not enough to take the connection down but clearly enough to slow it down at times.

Not sure if this would apply to your sub / router question, but the take away is that there is a possibility of interferance. Personally, I would get some distance between them......

FWIW - B.B.S.
