Stretching a screen

I have a laptop with a 64MB video 9600 card, I would like to stretch the screen from latop to desktop monitor. So far I am only able to have the same image on both monitors.

Also, the refresh rate on my laptop is 60hz which is fine, but when I plugged in my desktop monitor the refresh rate is also on 60Hz and its almost making it really hard to look at the screen for more than 5 seconds.

How do I fix both problems?
 
We'll need to know more about your laptop, particularly what video chipset it uses. Depending on your hardware it may not be possible to fix one or both of your problems.
 
the GPU is a Ati Mobile 9600. I went to the ATI set up and played around with the display settings but could not get it to work.

This screen on the latop is like 1,000 times better than the CRT one. It is just so clear and vivid.
