Stressing the main rig....OC testing for Stability

I am currently in the process of overclocking my main fold system. It a P4 3.6 GHz HT system. I have been running Prime 95 on it for about 12 hrs now. Its still running. Is it stable?

I had an issue when I first started with screwing up about 7 WU in a row. I need a good estimate for how long I should burn this in.

Thanks,

Try 24 hours is my thinking. I've had prime died after 8-12 before.

I hate that test, it will find a bad OC one way or another.

ok then. Gotta wait til 7 AM tommrow then. :( Oh well. Anyone else know something else to do besides fold?

Ah, stressing the main rig. Brings back memories of my first time.

To stress the main rig to see if it explodes, give StressCPU a try. You can get it on the download page at Larry's web site www.em-dc.com and it should make sure your SSE gets a good workout just like Folding will. Don't give up yet!

I tried using Stress CPU, and found it an excellent cooling test. It ran my system temps way up there; higher than I've ever seen while Folding. If you pass that test, you can be assured your cooling is up to snuff. I saw temps of 5-7C higher than Folding.

I still believe the preferred method of stressing and testing is still Prime95. It’s like the ultimate stress based on pure math and since we fold, which is math, it all makes sense.

The best part is Prime actually has a “stress” portion built right in so nothing is wasted as far as anyone’s project is concerned.

If you can Prime for 24 hours your stable for anything.

i thought that once, too!

i passed prime95, but i didn't pass memtest. That means, theoretically, i could still be generating errors.

Either, to be 100% sure, run prime95 for an inordinately long amount of time (like, a week :(), or, run memtest86 *first* (overnight) and, if you pass it, run prime95 (overnight).

I actually run memtest before I even try to oc a machine. Then I use prime. By doing that I almost never ever see a wu crash or drop out.

I love to see clean log files ;)
