I noticed a burning type of smell coming from the back of my computer today, so I "sniffed" around a little bit and noticed that it was only coming out of the big fan in the middle of the back of the computer, the one next to all the connections. I figured a smell like this would be coming from the power supply but it definitely wasn't. I checked all my temps and everything seemed fine and the computer was working fine also.

Anyone have any ideas of what/where the smell was coming from and any suggestions of what to do?

Maybe the fan itself is wearing out?

Definitely something worth looking into.. any of the case fans going bad could cause that type of thing, or perhaps an ccfl inverter on it's way out..

haha after hours of strenuous searching for a decaying small rodent...

the bad case fan makes a lot of sense since that was really the only place I could smell the burning odor, and also it is a LED fan

Ummm..... I'm assuming it's an exhaust fan? You do realize it's pulling case air out, which means if anything inside your case is burning up you'll smell it right there where the air is being exhausted. However, the cheap solution would be to start with the fan and work your way in from there.

Yes I do realize that but I smelled all over the inside of the computer and I could only smell it right around the fan.

However I do have a good amount of my cathodes right around the fan also, so I turned them all off and a few minutes later the smell was gone and it turns out that one of my cathodes burned out...so I'm guessing somehow that was giving off the smell.
