Strange Steam problem...

I loaded up steam, like normal.
My library loaded, like normal.
When I click a game, it says "preparing to launch"

Then it gets odd...

Most of the games, at this point, do nothing else. I get the "preparing to launch" and then the "preparing to launch" screen dissapears, but no game loads.

However, when I try to load Half-life 2 (but none of the other games I have downloaded), it launches, shows the "Valve" animation, then I see the windows pointer at like 2" in size, and then the screen flashes and dumps me back into Steam (which is now maximized)

I'm seeing no error messages at all... Any suggestions?

Sorry, absolutely no clue. I get a run time error occasionally, that's it.

Had this problem with one of the HL2 episodes when the orange box came out, it was video drivers. Mine were up to date, but the problem went away when nvidia released the next set a couple weeks after orange box launched.

Updating DirectX now... though DXdiag says I have DX11 apparently there was a small 22mb update
Updating nVidea drivers... somehow I had Version 0.0 so...

will report back whether these fix the problem.

Have you messed with your security settings in Windows at all? I've seen Data Execution Prevention cause this error in Win7 before.

Did you change Motherboards/other parts and not reinstall windows? My L4D 1 and 2 decided to not work anymore after I swapped Mobos without reinstalling windows.

Dont a shit ton of updates (including installing "windows security center" or something) so no clue, I'll check and see...

My Radeon X1300 died and thus was removed (running off onbiard nVidia chip --- which ironically is working BETTER than the radeon did!) but otherwise no major changes --- though I will be adding the new graphcis card I listed above when it arrives.

Did you use a program to wipe your old gpu drivers? Deleting them without one often causes issues.

Between Updating my Drivers and my DirectX I got Steam to work again!

Unfortunately Gordan Freeman has apparently turned into Sonic, given the speed he now moves in the game......... (and this is with all settings at MAX so I cant slow it down any further...)
