Strange RMA issue

I RMA'd my eVGA 7900GT KO a few weeks back and finally got my replacement card in the mail yesterday. To my surprise, I did not receive a 7900GT, but what was labeled as a 7950GT. However, my PC detects it as a 7900GS.

So far I have removed the card, wiped all nVidia drivers from my machine using DriverCleaner and re-installed the card. But before I could re-install the nVidia drivers, Vista saw it as a 7900GS.

So I am confused as to what I have on my hands here. I'm calling eVGA on Monday to get their take on it, but thought you guys might be interested in it too.

System Specs:
E6600@Stock
Foxconn G9657MA-8EKRS2H
2GB Corsair XMS2 PC-6400
Vista Business 32-bit

Probably a human error and they put the wrong card in the box. Whats the model number on the card?

Sounds like you have a 7900GS in the wrong box and were /supposed/ to receive a 7950GT. You, sir, have been shafted. Good news? Sounds unintentional. Call them up, explain, say you are unwilling to pay any more shipping and want the proper replacement card overnighted to you, cross shipped, and see what they do.

I would just state the facts and ask them to please make it right and as quickly as they possibly can. No need to state demands. Mistakes happen and being professional will get you 100 times farther than being confrontational.

The Heatsink and SN sticker are both that of a 7950GT, as is the box it came in from RMA. I called eVGA earlier and they have requested that I take pictures of the card front and back, as well as closeup shots of the stickers on the back and send them in to them for review.

i would call them up, explain the situation, and then demand a 7950GT as compensation.:p

So I sent in the pictures to the EVGA CSR I talked to on Saturday, but I haven't yet received a response.

I contacted EVGA's customer support department again today. I spoke to a different person this time. He and I touched on the obvious items first. Namely, driver issues. I assured him that I had wiped the drivers and reinstalled the newest WHQL drivers available. He then asked me to check the display adapter window under device manager to confirm how much memory the card has on board. I told him I would have to call back later when I was home and in front of the computer in question. Hell, I have to reinstall the card just to find out!

Now here's where it gets stranger.

I asked the CSR to confirm for me that they are open 24/7, which he did, but he then went on to suggest that a 7900GS is an acceptable replacement for my 7900GT because there is little to no difference between them.

Um, No.

Unless the EVGA 7900GS has some magical properties that I am unaware of, it is ~15% slower than the 7900GT KO I RMA'd, and is not an acceptable replacement. Much less one that has 7950GT written all over it. WTF is going on at EVGA?

I'm wondering at this point if I should just RMA the card and see what happens. Another part of me wonders if maybe this card simply has the wrong BIOS. I dunno. Very strange shit going on here.

If you had the KO and not KO Superclocked, they are pretty similar, though it is a slight downgrade so they should bump you up.

From GPU Review (nice clock changer built in, props to that guy since I know he reads these forums :))

7900GS KO
Core Clock: 500 MHz
Memory Clock: 660 MHz (1320 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 42.24 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 10000 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 8000 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 10000 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 875 MVertices/sec

Original Card(?)
7900 GT KO
Core Clock: 500 MHz
Memory Clock: 650 MHz (1300 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 41.6 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 12000 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 8000 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 12000 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 1000 MVertices/sec

I was amazed at how much higher the KO Superclocked version is clocked  its at like 580 / 760 (1580)

And for reference, 7950 GT KO
Core Clock: 560 MHz
Memory Clock: 725 MHz (1450 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 46.4 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 13440 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 8960 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 13440 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 1120 MVertices/sec

Which obviously beats all the above :p

Hope that helps if you need to give them specifics if you talk to the same guy, as they are close but the new card is indeed slower except for the memory.

Latest word from EVGA is that the card may simply have the wrong firmware/BIOS installed. I hope they are right.

That makes a lot of sense. Can you take a picture of it and post it. We can compare PCB's and check to see the layout VS the GS.

Cheers,

Front - Note the 7950GT on the Heatsink. (There are three layers of EVGA stickers on the heatsink. Maybe the heatsinks are recycled.)

Rivatuner seems to think that the card only has 256MB of RAM onboard. So it looks like I have an honest to god 7900GS in 7950GT clothing.

Thankfully, EVGA has agreed to take the card back and send me a replacement, they even offered to pay shipping both ways.

Good news - they're usually pretty good w/ righting wrongs as it were.... Did both way cross ship for me ages ago on a (3rd card I think) busted 7900GT, even though their cross-ship 'offer' had expired. I wasn't lucky enough to get a card 'upgrade' (ie: > 7950 or something), but I wasn't expecting it.

I can't believe the 2nd rep tried to bullshit you with 7900GS=7900GT though - they should KNOW BETTER. 7900GS +/-= 7800GT - 20 pipes vs the 79's 24. I'm glad you didn't fall for it.

the chips within the red area seem to not even be on your card, and the chips in blue are in different places on your card. glad to hear your getting it swapped.

I couldn't believe that part myself. Thankfully the next guy I spoke with was actually concerned about me (the customer) being taken care of. It is because of that guy that I am staying with EVGA for the foreseeable future..
