Strange problem: won't boot on first try

Just recently my PC has started failing to boot on the first try. It will POST and show the bios screen, but it stops there. The monitor goes into stand-by mode and the HD activity light stays on, but it isn't doing anything. If I hit reset it usually boots fine.

Today, though, I had to reset it twice to get it to boot. I'm worried that something is on verge of failing completely, and I have no idea what it is. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I haven't made any major changes to hardware, drivers, or OS recently, so I'm afraid that it's a hardware defect surfacing. I have nothing overclocked, so that isn't an issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
I had a similar problem; the cause was a hard drive and its impending failure. You can disconnect your hard drive and see if it posts without it.

It looks like you guys were off a bit. For the past few days I've had to reset it several times to get it to actually boot, but now it won't POST at all. I tried swapping hard drives and removing them all with no effect. I also tried swapping video cards, PSUs, and tried it without the memory, and it still won't POST.

Also, it seems that the PSU I took out of another machine to test my main machine with no longer works. It worked fine when I tested my main with it, although it didn't POST. When I put it back in the other machine it wouldn't turn on at all. The green power light on the motherboard came on, but hitting the power switch did nothing. I triple checked everything in it and still haven't got it working. Now both of my desktops are dead.

It seems like the motherboard and maybe the PSU in my main machine are the cause of the problem. It also seems like whatever failure occured also took out my main hard drive, as when I power it up it makes a strange clicking noise. Still no POST then either, of course.

I think I'll sell them for parts and take up needlepoint.
