strange problem: file names not displaying in windows explorer

For some reason all of my file names are now hidden in windows explorer, and for the life of me can't figure out why. They seemed to have dissappeared when I had a low hard disk issue (could have just been a coincidence) and my computer is spyware free. I tried restarting and the issue still exists. The same happens by clicking on "my documents" etc.

Usually a simple google search would be helpful but I can't seem to find anything on the issue.

EDIT:
>> if i change the "view" from thumbnails to icons / tiles / etc. the filenames re-appear, but in the thumbnail view they do not display. I tried the "rebuilding icons" option in tweakUI as well with no avail.
