I have an MSI gaming 290X. When ever I go to web pages with any type of video, my card temps just from like 40 to 70 degrees. This also happens when playing a video file like a MP4 or WMV or MKV. I have turned off hardware acceleration in firefox that did nothing. When I had my 780 it didn't do this. I'm using the 14.4 drivers. Any idea on what would cause this?

I have found that my 290x goes into a higher power mode far more often than my old GTX580 also.
I used to be able to run dual screen without appreciably using more power on my 580 but using 2 or more screens on my 290x uses another 40W.

The temps dont bother me cos I'm using an Accelero Extreme cooler on my 290.
It uses at least 40W more power when not idle.

Try using MSI afterburner to make a custom fan profile that brings the temp down if it bothers you.

What I don't understand is, Nvidia cards do not do this, why do AMD cards?

Its what is required to provide a quality experience.
NVidia manage it using less power for some operations.

Aw OK got it. So in other words Nvidia cards are much more energy efficient that AMD?

XFX 290X DD here. I don't have temperature fluctuations like you're exhibiting. I do get a spike when I switch from regular to full screen but it dies down quickly after the initial switch. Using 64-bit Internet Explorer 11 with Windows 8.1. Also, no spikes in VLC player 2.1.4 64-bit.
