A few months ago a friend talked me into getting a new hsf for my barton 2500+. We pushed the fsb up to 200 and left multiplier at 11. It worked perfectly fine up until now. When it is set back to normal speed it is fine, but when overclocked the computer turns itself off as soon as a farcry level starts to load or at a random time while playing any other game. The odd thing is, when it goes off, pushing the power button does nothing. The red led on the motherboard stays on even for a few seconds after fipping the switch on the power supply. After the power on the power supply is off for a few seconds the lights on my keyboard and the laser in my optical mouse flash on and back off. I then flip the switch back to on, hit the power button, and it starts to boot. I've never bothered letting it try to boot, I go straight to bios to put it back to a 2500+. When leaving the bios, I hate save, "Y" for yes, hit enter and BAM, computer goes off again in the same manner as before. I flip the switch off for a few seconds and back on, when I turn the computer on I get the screen that says "DO NOT TURN POWER OFF WHILE BIOS IS SAVING". The computer then restarts and works fine. The processor is running plenty cool the entire time, never exceeding 57c

No hardware had been changed when it started happening, it just kind of happened. I have formatted since it happened and it didn't change anything so it's obviously a hardware issue. Am I looking at a power supply issue or can the processor just not take it any more?
 
The power supply could be the problem, but if it ran fine at one time it's not likely it degraded or anything.

Try to do a complete CMOS reset which will clear your bios. Then set things back to 11.0x and 166 fsb and see if that works.
 
It runs perfectly fine at 166x11, I'll reset the cmos tomorrow and see what happens, too tired now.
 
I have basically he same setup and had the same problem. To fix mine I read that all you have to do is turn up the core voltage. I have had my 2500+ running at 3200+ speeds for over 3 weeks now stable and temperatures never reaching over 20C (on water cooling) and with my SLK-900U they never reach over 33C.
 
What did you turn the voltage up to? I run mine at 1.9 when overclocked.
 
it may be possible that your computer was running but not tottaly stable, and far cry was just enough to push it over the edge... are you able to change the multi on your cpu? you might want to try 200 x 10... not all chips are equal, some can do 2.6 some can do 2.1 that's just the way it is.. if it can't do 2.2 stable with 1.9v then it probably won't do it at all..

but it could also be your psu
your memory timings

maybe something else.. a good psu is something you should have anyways... so you might as well get one and see if it fixes your problem...
 
Its probably not enough Vcore or PSU is not supplying enough, or a combination of both of these happening (bad).

I'd take care of the PSU first tho--I would never trust putting my components at risk for a generic PSU. Before you OC again, I'd replace that PSU with an Antec or Enermax.
 
It just did it while loading a level for painkiller (after playing for a while) and I'm not even overclocked :\
