Strange Lockups in ME

Ok, heres my issue.

I work for a locksmith company, and we have a pc here we use mainly for looking up key codes. Well, this PC recently has taken to locking up when left inactive. Its gradually gotten worse and worse it seems, to the point where after the PC boots, you must immediatley look up the code you want, or the system will hard lock. Im using windows ME (sigh) but am not getting blue screens. Ive tested the RAM thinking it might be a bad stick, but its fine. Ive checked all power save, standby, suspend and settings like that thinking somthing was going wrong becasue it was left idle. I turned them all off, including the ones in BIOS. Does anyone have any solutions for me that isnt formatting / new OS. The problem is that the software we use is highly secured software, and is a pain to get reinstalled on a new system. Any help would be great, thank you.

Check your system temps.
When was the last time the case was opened and the whole thing cleaned of dust ?

Luck......... :D

Two things occur; HD defrag and a memory defrag utility. When I ran Me I managed a whole week on 15 PCs without a reboot due to using a RAM defragger running all the time.

yeah, lol, the only way we can look up key codes is i constantly run defrag, it get the job done, but ya know, its only a temporary fix, keep the ideas coming. And as for temps, the case is stellarly clean, and the temps max out at 40, so shes running beautifully in that aspect.

Hum, high temps would of been my guess.

Time to run the standard line-up. starting with Memtest86+. If that passes, try a different powersupply.

Try installing Norton and running windoctor maybe? Seems to be at least somewhat useful on the older 9x OSes.

I second that.. if running norton won't help I think you end up reformatting.. and if you don't want the situation to happen again change the OS..

Everyone in the IT dept. where i work agrees - you waived all rights to complain when you started using ME. I propose a weekly reformatting if you'd like to keep it running smoothly.

Idea: buy a new OS...

Second Idea: if it's not an important enough task to warrant the 100 dollar investment in a new OS... then stop doing it... it's not worth your time ;)

yeah, like i said. this isnt my pc, its the one at work, and i have no idea why anyone in their right mind would use ME, if you look in my original post, i show my distain for ME there. And my boss being a non so computer saavy guy says, well its worked fine up until now, why do we need new expensive software. So. kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. I know it isnt the RAM, so ill try norton. Ill let you know tuesday night when i get home from work, if it did anything.

did anyone install new screen savers?, even customised ones?

check for irq conflicts.

you turned off all APM / ACPI?, even HD cycle down? is there enough disk space? is the recycle bin full and can't be emptied? what size is the Health files? how big is the power supply?

you sure asked a lot of questions, and theyve all been checked and taken care of. As for the power supply, its sufficient, im not near it as of now, but if its that important, ill check tommorrow, the pc did work for years up to this point.

....spyware? Someone do a little net surfin' and bring home some app that's determined to "phone home" now and then, dropping anchor on the whole show...?? Seen it before....

AdAware is your buddy......

Good Luck - B.B.S.

ME sucked hard for a lot of reasons but mostly becuase it self destructs. Explain that to your boss. Tell him he has two choices to fix this.

Format and re-install ME
or
format and install XP.

Either way, that install in ME is toast.

yeah, i assumed so, it seems one of the x employees had left some discs around, and i happened to find one with a ghost image on it ;-). So i know what im doing tomorrow.
