Strange install problem

Basically my install of WinXP is failing to find the IDE drivers. Neither SATA nor raid is involved. Mobo is Biostar M7NCG, a nForce2 based board. HDD is a WD 80GB. I have tried designating it as a single drive and as cable select. Both methods show the HDD as IDE 0 on primary channel.

If I boot from CD and hit F6 to specify additional drivers it shows that no mass storage drivers were detected. The HDD is new and was just tested on a secondary channel of another system.

Memtest came back with no errors.

I am stumped. I have done the exact same installation in the past with a Seagate drive and had no problem.


Possible causes that I can think of:
-some strange issue with the drive and the Nforce2 board
-Sunspots
-IDE controller part of the chipset was eaten by gremlins

Anyone have ideas on what is causing this?
 
Umm, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but if all you have is one hard drive and it's not SATA then you don't need to press F6 at that time in the setup procedure. Just let the setup continue on by itself and everything will be ok.

That's what I do every time I'm (re)installing on my system, but of course I don't have an 80GB hard drive. I only have a 40GB.
 
I normally don't hit F6, but ended up trying it to see if it was detecting anything. Basically I tried both ways of getting it to install.
 
Well, I swapped out the HDD for another 80
GB and things are now ok. Yeah for the officemax deal a few weeks ago!
