strange headphone noises

I have some of those 5.1 headphones and they are making a weird whining sound sometimes. It seems after i click something, like a button in vista and it does a simple click noise, it will start making noise at a certain pitch, then click another and it changes a little bit. This is definitely worse when i am playing a game or watching a movie or anything with constant low ambient noise. Like oblivion, just walking around with forest noise and low volume music or something it's just constantly making a little noise. Playing CS or listening to music is unaffected by the problem, when the speakers are being used for loud, constant sounds i cannot hear the whine at all.

Anyone know what could cause this? I am using onboard sound and was thinking that maybe a nicer sound card could off better connections.

Try muting the inputs on your sound device you are not using. If your not using the line_in, Mic_in etc...mute them all. sometimes when they are left "floating" they pickup interference and you can hear it in the mix. Might help:)
