A while back, I bought me a DiamondMax 10 250 GB that I saw on sale (1/2 off thanks to a Staples B+M grand opening, nailed it for 70 bucks), and was using it as a secondary hard drive. Well, I managed to kill it somehow, and RMA'd it back to Maxtor. Like an idiot (who lacks a credit card) I used the Standard RMA, so I figured I wouldn't see the damned thing for a month or so.
In the meantime, I finally upgraded my PC (no more Coppermine or volcanic Thunderbird, hooray!), and lo and behold the RMA finally completes. Maxtor, being the nice people they are, ended up sending me a 300 gig DM10, so I figured that I came out ahead in the deal. So I stick the 300 gig onto a secondary IDE, and make sure the damned thing works. It is recognized, initializes, and partitions perfectly. I backed up the 40 gig system HDD onto a few DVD-Rs, as I was due for a hardcopy backup anyways, took it out, and put the 300 in its place. After making sure all the jumper settings were correct, I rebooted the PC and stuck my XP Pro CD in. Up comes the "Windows is scanning your hardware" message.
It hangs there. Fuck.
My initial reaction was that Maxtor had sent me a second borked HDD, but then I recalled my testing beforehand. The drive works fine, unless I try to install Windows. Just to check that it wasn't a sudden hardware problem that appeared in the last hour or so, I slapped the 40 back in, and see if the Windows install prompt comes up. It does. I run over to Staples again, and pick up a 200 gig DM10 (hey, I'm putting together a file server anyways, a 40 ain't gonna cut it), and put THAT in. Boots up fine again.
Now, I'm wondering if maybe it's a BIOS issue, but there is no updated bios for my mobo. Like I said, the drive works fine unless I try to install windows onto it. What could be the problem?
