Strange HDD Problem

I have an ASUS CROSSHAIR motherboard with six SATA ports.

I already have a drive on SATA-1(operating system) and a drive on SATA-2

I now have a third drive which I would like to connect to SATA-3. The drive is formatted and everything, and works perfectly on other computers. My BIOS sees it as well

When I start my computer, windows(XP) does not notice the drive in any way(my computer, disk management, system devices). However, if I unplug the cable and plug it back in again while windows is running, windows sees it immediately.

I can only use the drive when I hotplug it as such, it won't work on startup.

Also, when I try booting to Vista, the computer just hangs forever. Even windows XP takes several minutes longer to start up when I have this thing connected.

Any ideas?

Have you tried a different port? It almost sounds like the SATA port might be bad.

Yeah, I've tried all of them, same results.

Its a Seagate Barracuda ST3300831AS if that helps.

Does this third drive have a jumper on it ?
If so then remove it and see if that helps .

i think this is a clear example of low psu power, you need a more powerful psu i think.

That's what I thought at first, but I tried disconnecting all of my drives except for the new one and my OS drive, and still had the problem.

On a side note, I've discovered that by disabling and re-enabling the SATA controller in device manager, it will also cause Windows to detect the drive. If I can't figure anything else out, I might try that. I'd just have to do it every time I reboot....
