A few days ago I assembled my new comp and after WinXp installation I got into troubles.
After first WinXP install everything seem to work OK, but probably after I connected my old Maxtor 120GB IDE hdd something messed up and my SATA Samsung started to work very slowly - even after I copied everything and removed old hdd from system. System permanently set up hdd to PIO mode and there were endless number of messages in event viewer:
51 An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.
9 The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.
And a few others:
26 The driver has detected that device \Device\Ide\IdePort0 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result.
11 The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.
I tried connecting hdd to different positions on ICH8 but it didn't help. I tried to check disk with Samsung diagnostic tool "Hutil" and it show no problem with it, I tried changing SATA cable. When I connected the drive to SATA port on JMicron controller everything was right but I was not satisfied such a strange things in new comp so I reinstalled WinXP once again with disk on ICH8.
This time everything works OK, system is stable - no a single crash when browsing, testing, stress-testing, playing. There're no errors in event viewer but another problem appeared. When rebooting or starting-up system powers-off with hdd click, turns-on, hdd clicks one or two times, and then everything goes ok. IE when I push power button to turn system on it turns-on, hdd click, turns-off, turns-on hdd clicks and then normally goes. Same happens on ICH8 and Jmicron. It doesn't happen every time i start or boot system but in most cases.
Can you help me with idea what's wrong? Is it hdd (passing Hutil diagnostic every time), mobo, PSU, cables or maybe something else?
There's one more thing. After first and second install I have the same issue with mouse - cordless Logitech MX700. Sometimes after system start, on welcome screen with user listing mouse works OK, but when I click on user to login mouse freezes after user profile is loaded. I have to remove and then inserts cable to mouse ps2 port and then mouse is active again. I never experienced anything like that with this mouse in my two previous systems.
