Has anyone seen HD Tach results like this before? Details below the pics
System Info
Windows 2003 Server Enterprise 64bit Edition
Supermicro 4U (743) w/ 645W PSU
Tyan 2882-D mobo
2x Opteron 246
8x 1GB PC3200 ECC REG
WD4000KD boot drive attached via mobo SIL3114 controller
Areca 1160 PCI-X RAID controller w/ 256MB Cache, staggered spin up set to 1s between drives
3x DiamondMax 21 (7200.10 w/ 3.AAE) RAID5
2x Seagate 7200.9 w/ 3.AAH set as pass through
various other drives from Seagate, Maxtor and WD set as pass through drives. Never more than 8 total drives in system.
So far all combinations of windows/mobo bios/areca bios settings that I have tried have yet to change the results. In all cases, the STR for reads on drives connected to the SIL3114 seems to be fine, the ARECA however seems to be limited to ~9MB/s for single drives and ~27MB/s for RAID5. The STR for writes on the 3114 is likewise fine, and from what I can test, it appears pretty good for the ARECA too. In a test write of a 10GB single file from the WD4000KD to the RAID5 array, I was seeing ~57MB/s. That seems pretty reasonable for data read from WD drive and then written by the ARECA 1160 to the RAID 5 array. File operations between drives/arrays on the ARC-1160 are painfully slow in and usually measure around 9MB/s. I have dealt with slow RAID before but nothing that seems to be so limited once the cache is drained.
I have tried all the PCI-X slots on the mobo with no change in performance, I have removed RAM, drives and all other PCI cards to try to free up resources/power to no avail. Both the SCSI and the STORPORT driver give roughly the same results. Prior to the ARC-1160 being installed last month, the system had run for 355 days without being rebooted with 4 drives hooked to the SIL 3114.
All tests have been duplicated with HD Tune and IOMeter with similar results.
So does anyone have a guess why my fancy RAID controller has such poor read performance? It does not matter what single drive or array I set up, I cannot get at read STR better than ~9MB/s * number of drives in array.
