Strange Folding problem

I got a dual core processor 2 weeks ago, since then it seems when I try to run folding over night my system shuts down. This only happens when I am not using the computer, it does not crash while I am running games or watching movies or anything like that. Sometimes when I turn on the computer after it shuts down it said that windows has recovered from a serous error, but when I check the event logs nothing is showing up. This only happens when I am running folding, I am overclocked from 2GHz to 3GHz but like I said it is stable when I am using the computer. I can run 3DMark 2006 with no problems, Sisoft sandra memory test's, processor tests, and the cach and memory tests all with no problems.

I have not been able to figure out this strange problem

I am running vista 32bit have all the latest drivers for motherboard, video card, sound, and windows is up to date.

I agree.. Myself, I'm able to run at 3.5 GHz orthos stable for over 4 hours but it also has issue with random reboots so I knew it's too high.

first thing to do is to put back to stock, do testing for 48-72 hours to see if it is stable. If yes, then rework your overclocking since it's possible there is no enough voltage, cooling or you had a crappy overclocker on your hands.

Ya but as far as I can tell noting else will cause the system to do this, only when I have folding going will it shut down. is there something built in to the client that if it has errors it shuts the system down?

but if it is unstable other things should cause windows to crash or something, not just shut down with no warning. It seems like something is telling windows to shut down the proper way. not just a crash situation where it crashes and restarts.

There are various degrees of stability and if you are really on the very edge of stability, a slight error will cause it to reboot unexpectedly.

but the problem is that it is not rebooting, it just shuts down and I have to hit the power button to start the system. It is as if I went to the start button and hit shutdown. i have not had one blue screen or any kind of error that I can tell being related to the system being unstable.

I was having a VERY similar problem when I had my G.Skill ram OC'd. Once I swapped it to stock speeds, it was stable as could be.

I just think it is strange that if it is having problems that it is not locking up, but why would I be able to run all of my games and other programs with out it doing this. That is what is confusing me the most, I cant get the system to do it when I try to make it crash with what ever kind of stress test I throw at it. I have water cooling and the temps are 108F full load both cores, I am wondering if it is some way related to vista. But that would be a huge shock

O and like I said this NEVER happens when I am actually at the computer, always when I am not doing anything with it. I think I have a ghost problem

Did you try to run 24 hours of Orthos with the blend test ??

You were right orthos is getting errors, will have to recheck my settings.

You guys were right, I down clocked 2.8GHz and orthos has been running fine for 5 hours now

If your computer isn't perfectly stable, F@H will definately show it. Since you are overclocking by a healthy margin, watch out for early unit ends periodically. EUE will happen if F@H decides the calculations were performed incorrectly and the wu will return to Stanford and you won't get many points.
