This is really strange. With some monitors my eyes start to hurt pretty quickly (eye strain), with some there is no problem and I can't find a pattern here. It is not tied to brightness/contrast/colour settings.

For example at work, with the same computer, cable, lightning conditions there monitors cause discomfort to my eyes:
19" Dell 1907FP (TN)
19" Dell 1905FP Rev00 (Samsung PVA)

But this monitor is perfectly OK:
19" Dell 1905FP Rev02 (AUO P-MVA)

Some other monitors tested at different conditions:

OK:
NEC 2690 (H-IPS)
BenQ G2400W (TN)
HP LP2480zx (IPS)
HP LP2465 (S-PVA)
BenQ FP91G (TN)

Not OK:
BenQ FP241W (A-MVA I think)

All these have matte displays.

Maybe it has something to do with the back-light characteristics?

Edit: I don't have problem with fluorescent lights.

You might be sensitive to backlight flicker. Backlights use PWM switches to decrease the brightness. At 100% brightness, LCD monitor backlights operate at many thousands of Hz which cannot possibly cause irritation through flicker (but in most cases is just too bright). But as the brightness goes down, the backlights of some monitors may dip to just a few hundred Hz, possibly even below 200Hz, which can bother some people.

The flicker rate of backlights at different settings is not a spec that the monitor industry communicates to anyone, so you are left with trial-and-error experimentation, as you have already done.

LED monitors are not a solution; they use PWM switches for brightness just like CCFL backlights do.

Thanks.

Yeah, that may be the thing. However I had no problem with my CRT. Well it was set to 100Hz.
I'll do some more testing.

Too bad about LED monitors not being the solution :(
