I tried playing half life 2 today. Loaded a gamesave which is about 2.5 hours into the game. I have not had any troubles up until now. When i get into hl2 I play for about 1 minute and all the sudden it crashes. Not the program, basically my entire computer. What happens is the game freezes, then the sound keeps looping constantly. I can't do a three finger salute, I am forced to do a hard shutdown.

I figured it was something with hl2. Then I played a game called digital paintball, i downloaded for half life. when I play that game the same thing happens. Sometimes a really high pitched screeching sound comes out of my sound card when the computer crashes. So now it's defnitely not hl2 causing the crashes.

The odd thing is that I can play nfsu 2 all day and nothing will happen. I'm thinking it's possibly:

1. Bad sectors on my hd, in which steam just so happens to be installed right there, and not nfsu 2
2. Bad memory. The memory is under a year old, all the same brand (nyana). I'll try to test it with a mem tester to see.
3. HD is failing completely. I had 2 wd 80 gigs in raid 0, the raid 0 recently crashed and I had to start from scratch, maybe this hd is causing it.

Either way I need some sort of program that can test all my components to see if they are working okay. Anyone recommend anything? Windows isn't helping either, disk scans come out fine (although I haven't done the test for bad sectors, takes forever), and nothing is logged in the event log at the time of the crashes.
