Strange computer clicking/freezing

My problem is that from time to time I will be in the middle of playing a game or just working on a report or surfing the internet and my computer will just freeze for 3-10 seconds. I then normally hear a distinct (single) "click" come from the computer and all is back to normal. When I'm in a game, normally what happens is my entire screen will freeze and the audio will just loop with whatever was just happening.

I've checked most of my drivers and I believe they are all up-to-date. One thing that I thought of is that I configured all of my SATA ports to be AHCI, so they're all basically plug-n-play'ish. I do seem to hear the clicking from time to time and nothing will happen, but normally it happens just at the end of a freeze-up.

Computer Specs
Mobo: ASUS P6T
Processor: Intel i7 920 2.67Ghz
Memory: Corsair DDR3 2GB Trichannel x 6 (12GB total)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 1GB (x2 SLI) (BFG OCX)
HDD: 1.5TB SATA
PSU: 750W Corsair
OS: Windows 7 x64

I appreciate whatever advice I can get!

disconnect the HD and try another disk, or a bootable environment, see if it stops
