Strange 9600xt problem

(Please excuse my frequent typos, this laptop'skeyboaard sucks)

The familycomputer has been getting behind lateely whnvr my dad wantsto play his games. It is a Dell with an fX5200 in it. Even though Dell upgrades usually aren't feasible,i looked aat what cards are out there and i decided to buy a 9600xt formy dadfor Christmas, it was a nice upgraade, but no so muchc as it had drasstic power increases or the like.\

When it came in, I uninstalled the old card and installed the 9600xt. When it came up, there were blue lines all over the dell bootup screen and the windows loading screen. Thinking it may be a driver issue(i had forgotten to uninstall the nvidia ones), i shut the computeerdown and rebootd in safe mode. It booted up fine, with no blue lines anywhere. I uninstalled all theold video card drivers annd installedthe ati drivers.I thought it wasfine aand rebooted. Blue lines on thedell bootup screen and on thee windows loading screen again. Rebooted in safe mode, no blue lines.

So right now I am confused out of my mind about this. It would point to a driver issue, but it comes up on the dell loading screen, beefore windows even starts. I thought itcould be a power issue, but it works perfectly fine when in safemode. Any ideas?
 
sounds like a bad card id rma that or if you still can take it back to the store and exchnge it for a nother one
 
If it were a bad card then why would it be perfectly fine with no graphical problems or glitches when the computer is in safe mode?
 
there shouldnt be lines on bootup, lines on bootup have nothing to do with drivers and point to hardware

If it shows problems before Windows even starts, then it's going to either be a video card or a power supply issue. Safe Mode uses standard Windows drivers (as opposed to ATI's drivers) which might under certain circumstances make a bad card work alright but you wouldn't be able to play games or anything because those drivers are pretty much just so you can navigate the desktop.
 
Does anyone know how large the power draw difference is between an FX5200 with a passive heatsink and a 9600XT with a small fan on it? (Does not connect to a PSU lead) Would it be large enough to cause the card to not function?

Standard Windows drivers are 2D only, whereas ATI drivers for the video card are 3D accelerated, even in 2D applications such as Windows. It speeds "snappiness" of visual elements, supposedly.
Anyway, if your problem with the blue lines was appearing whenever you booted Windows normally, it would be a driver problem, or a video card problem. However, because they appear at the bootup screen as well, but not during safe mode, and then again during normal driver use, I'd hazard a guess, and say your PSU is too weak, or the card is bad (somehow). Swap the PSU with yours, if it works fine, there's your problem. If it doesn't, RMA the card.

Massive. The 9600XT is one of those cards that barely gets enough power from the AGP slot, and really, really, REALLY needs an external power connector. Because it doesn't, an underpowered PSU with a slight droopage on the 12V line (as in Dell's case, usually) means that there will be problems.

I dunno...you sure about that? The 9600xt was one of those cards that could be passively cooled with no problems and that puny little fan on it isn't capable of dissipating THAT much heat to begin with. I think it may be "close" to the limits...but there should still be plenty of room to play with.

Most people that were able to mod the molex connector on their 9600xt either saw NO gains in stability/overclockability or very minimal. My card wasn't able to have the molex mod and it was able to reach 655Mhz on the core and 740mhz(ddr) on the ram perfectly stable after bumping the vcore and vmem, which obvioulsy raises power requirements.

my vote is for a dead card. But yeah, try the PSU too since you never really know.

Hey, I'm just the messenger. Only what I've heard about the place. I also thought the molex mod was because the guy who did it was having problems with his card? Not too sure.
 
mine done that once and a while never could figer it out. but most the time i moved my tower around a bit and it stopped. check your CRT cable were it hooks up to the card or try anthor one all togather. it might have a bad cable cuaseing it to do it.
