Strange 5850 Problem

Hi guys, recently upgraded to a Sapphire 5850 from a 8800 gts.

Everything seemed to install fine, using the newest catalyst drivers on thier site, 9.10 I believe. My issue is sort of odd, so here goes. Occasionally, and usually from a cold boot, after loading up windows I'll open up IE and load up my homepages, sometimes when starting to scroll down from the first website I read, IE will lockup. It will stay like this for a good 30 seconds and hitting ctrl-alt-delete will eventually bring up the vista task manager.

After it recovers the "Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered" dialog box opens in the bottom right. Now it only seems to do this after the cards been cold for awhile, and it doesn't always do it. It does happen enough however where it's sort of annoying.

The ONLY problem I have really had with the card is this, and after this error occurs it runs flawless forever afterwards. I've ran 3dmark from cold boots, and games from cold boots, but it only seems to lockup the one time while scrolling down the first webpage lol.

Specs are :

E6400@2.8ghz (I've ran optimal defaults and it still did it so it's not the overclock near as I can tell)
4gigs Geil DDR2
GA-965p-s3
Vista Home 32 bit
Sapphire 5850
Antec Truepower 650

I realize the board is older, this was an old setup, got the 5850 mainly for dragon age, which it runs flawless so far. I just don't understand why it occasionally locks up from a boot once in internet explorer. I am running the latest possible bios for the board too.

I've installed all the newest motherboard drivers I could fine, Vista is up to date, and catalyst is up to date as well. I know the 5800 line still has bugs being ironed out since they are a new launch, so should I wait and see what driver updates do? I doubt the cards bad since everything runs beautifully otherwise, seems like a driver issue somewhere.

Anyone else have any similar issues with the 5850 or 5870 cold boots and display error has stopped working yadda yadda.

Oh I should mention one other weird thing, upon the initial cold boot, and the display driver restart, I notice the clocks on the card just run at 725/1000 without throttling down anymore in windows... If I restart though chances are the display error doesn't happen and the throttling works fine.

You've stated that it only happens in IE.
Have you tried firefox?
Chrome?
Opera?
Safari?

The only people I know who still use IE are the ones who don't know any better. Not tryin to flame you, just sayin. If it only happens in IE, then the obvious first solution is to try something else.

I'll try chrome and see how that goes, honestly never had an issue with IE so never really tried the others, is one any better then the other?

chrome or FF are your best options though everyone has their own favorite..

OP, did you use any driver cleaner before installing the new card? There could be residual registry entries or driver conflicts causing the issue. I wouldn't immediately blame IE for the problem.

Maybe try a fresh install of Windows.

+1 with the drivers, find any nvidia files and programs from the control panel uninstall page and remove them.

Maybe he should try clearing the bio's? if you do this write down your OCing numbers (multiplier, fsb ect...)
To reset you bio look on the motherboard for something that looks like a battery shaped like a nickle, and remove it for about 5 minutes, pop it in and restart, or if you have a clear CMOS button push that.

If you remove the battery to clear the CMOS, make sure you unplug the power cable to the PSU too ;).

I don't think this would help though. I would uninstall ATI drivers, run driver cleaner, and reinstall. Messing with the BIOS should be your 2nd to last resort to fix it (next a complete OS re-install).

I ran drive sweeper and removed any old nvidia drivers prior to installing the card. The only nvidia stuff showing up are the Physx drivers. On a side note so far, been using firefox since yesterday and so far so good.

If it happens with a different browser I'll look into reinstalling the drivers all over again.

oddly enough, I was having the same issue OP in vista 64 with a 260GTX

from what I recall, it seemed to only be an issue with source games though. Don't have much to offer other than that. Problem went away since moving to Win7... Good luck
