Storm meets Aqua Computer

Well, I have been debating with myself how to introduce this brand new Storm block sitting on my desk. Here were my options.

1. Buy a high flow pump (=loud) with huge tubing and just give in.
2. Buy a quite pump and use 3/8" tubing.
3. Convert the block to plug n cool and have at it!

So my final idea was to find a way to mix my large surplus of Aqua Computer stuff with the Storm block. I plan to use 3/8" tygon with an AquaStream pump connected to my Aquaero!. Cooling the water is a Thermochill PA120.2. Here is step one.

Now if someone would get their shipment, I could cover this Northbridge the right way! Notice that the Northbridge on the ATI Crosfire board is different than typical DFI layouts. The bridge now fits nicely between the cards and should work for any northbridge block.

And a BIG THANKS to Richard @ Sharka yesterday. I called him at 5pm to see if he would stay till 6pm so I could get my compression fittings. Richard was nice enough to wait for me to arrive and made sure I had everything I needed.
 
One question, how are you keeping the NB cooler in place? I don't see any attachment pins holding it on and the mount points are sitting in the wrong position for the ATI board when the cooler is in the position that you have it now.
 
Actually that is the exact position, just no bolts on it right now. I have a Twinplex Pro SLI block coming and don't know if I will be able to hold out.
 
OK..cool, just wondering.............. :cool: Looks like you should have a cool running system there. That MoBo is what I'm planning on for my next build.............. :cool:
 
Why are you mixing high flow parts with low flow? I cant see how this system is gona perform well as the storm requires a high flow setup and one hell of pump.

Nope, while the Storm block excells at high flow, it also performs very well at low flows as well.

I'm sure it will run quite fine as the Aquastream pump is capable of running just shy of 1 GPH with a 6mm ID. Be interesting to see how it runs on a 3/8 ID as R1ckCa1n has a flowmeter equipped Aquaero. Now if I could just get past that glaring yellow I might be able to see my way to getting one of those boards. ;)

Hey my Tubemeter's and Multiswitch is in that shipment as well so I want it today too! :(
 
I'd be very surprized if he got close to 1 GPM with the Storm block along with a NB block in the loop seeing as a MCP350 only pushs a little over 1.2 GPM without a NB block in the loop and the MCP350 has twice the head pressure. But it should cool well regardless as the Strom block works well down to around 0.5 GPM

"Again, the MCP655 comes out on top delivering 87 GPH total system flow thru a Storm waterblock, 6x6x2 heater core, and 4’ of ½” ID tubing. This is a direct result of being able to generate good head pressure and flow a large volume of water. Notice in this test how well the small MCP350 (DDC) pump did (thanks to its high head pressure) and how poorly the Eheim 1250 did. Even though the big E-1250 has the potential to flow over 300 GPH, its relatively low head pressure prevents it from doing so."

I hope that X1800XT gets enough cooling for you to push it to its potential. I have a feeling your second loop is a bit too long to really get the best cooling on your X1800XT, dont they run quite hot? You should be fine on stock, but I wanna see some overclocking goodness!
 
heh i been waitin a looooooooooooong time on your system rick, so im watchin to see what you do. and i really wanna see the ramplexes in action mane!

and as you guys know im planning a secondary loop myself for the ram and i suppose i might as well do the NB too (dfi sli board), so that brings me to askin you rick: where is that second rad gonna be for you?

Wait to you see the block that is cooling it. :D The top view does not do it justice.
 
Nice man, let us know how it all works out. I might have missed something but are you running two cards ( crossfire ) or just one. Can you even run two with NF4 ? to lazy to google it :p

it isn't an NF4, it's an express 200.
 
Well no new picks but I am just getting the OS running. Thank god I made a slipstream version with the ATI chipset drivers inserted (highly recommended to anyone installing new boards).

I decided at the last minute NOT to cool the RAM. After fighting my rear 120.2 radiator and finding out this DFI board moves the video card up two blanks making the bottom of the radiator touch the card, I just gave up. There is no way this cooler can clamp down on OCZ ram with the heatspreader still on so I am saving that for another day. I was already depressed because I could not find a way to get the second Thermochill PA120.2 in the case as it was. In the end I totally gave up and just put a BIX II 120 radiator to cool the second loop.

So now the second loop is GPU -> NB -> Hard Drive 1 -> Hard Drive 2.

I guess the third loop will be RAM PLEX only!

It isn't the ability of the waterblock to cool it that I was talking about, it was the 6 block loop running on essentially an Eheim 1048 that I was referring to.

The way it works is top secret. Please don't tell anyone that lower flowing equipment really does work as AC stuff is hard to get already. :p

*sigh* would you please re-read my first post damnit! I have no doubt that it will be able to cool the card adequately. I just want the card to get excellent cooling so he can push it to its max OC. The X1800 series is supposed to be able to reach some insane clocks if you have the cooling to keep up with it. The 6 block loop will no doubt still be able to cool it at stock and maybe a mild overclock. Whether or not it will limit the overclock is what I was not sure about.
 
I can tell you running four blocks on this loop is not limiting my X1800XT as it now runs at a nice 37c idle 40c load (50c idle / 75c load with stock heatsink). I did not have time to get the system up as I was not only introducing the new blocks, I was replacing motherboard and RAM.
 
Well good news. The Storm block is now installed and fully functional as a stand alone loop.

Old loop: Aquastream -> BIX II -> AC Cuplex XT -> AquaTube = 24c (6mm/8mm plug n cool)
New Loop: Aquastream -> Thermochill PA 120.2 -> Storm -> Thermochill Res = 23c (3/8" tygon)

I have an AC Aquastream cooling 6 blocks.. and they are doing just fine.

Aquatube > Aquastream > flow meter > Aquabay dual > Alphacool GPU > Ramplex > Ramplex > AC SLI chipset block > MIPS mosfet cooler > EVO360 rad.

And guess what? With 2 x Papst 4412 FGLL (yes the slowest 19db ones, the thrid one doesn't actually kick in until the heat rises) running at 57% power (that's only slightly more than 7V).

Means my rig is virtually silent and my temps are peachy, everything in the low 30s... under load everything bar the PWMIC ad the GPU stays in the low 30s...

and my flow rat?? only 0.7 l/m.. O_O shocking!

A lot of the most experienced people say 1/2"is actually 'too big'! O_O oh noes!

they use it largely for looks, and the performance hit isn't bad, on modern blocks.

As much as others around here detest my car analogies I will risk their wrath one more time. ;) In the 60's and 70's we saw the development of the muscle cars. These were the big block hemi's and the bored out balls to the walls high HP engines. Much of this dribled down into the autos that most people were driving at the time. Then came the fuel crunch and emission controls which translated into 4 bangers that were pathetic little shadows of the big blocks.

Prior to this an automotive ignition system comprised of a set of points, a coil, and a distributor. However, as time went on the car manufacturers were able to fine tune and integrate the electronics so as to get low emissions AND high performance at the same time with decent mileage. What we are seeing now is the same push to develop technologically superior watercooling devices that depend on the same electronic interfaces to give excellent cooling, low power requirements, and looks at the same time. Would you rather have a 60-70's Dodge Duster V-8 or a 2005 Lexus? ;)

Yep. Actually just switched to a Blackberry 7290 this week though.

Anyway, I see you went with the side holed thick plexi top for your GPU, how you gonna get sinks on those ram chips?

Basically tell me everything you've learned so I can steal all your secrets and save myself from trial and error...

BTW, I'm about place an order tomorrow or Monday with Franz if you found out you needed something you don't have yet.

Erm. Whats wrong with 3/8" tubing?

When I switched my system over to 3/8" tubing (on 1/2" barbs), my temperatures went lower... So, whats so wrong with it?

Your car analogy is half baked, you completely overlook the fact that the air/fuel system was what saw the biggest improvement in the world of automotives. A fancy ass ignition system will give you a minor increase in power on a car with a shitty fuel delivery system whereas a car with fuel injection and a good porting job with a point type ignition will see a massive power increase.

Now, combining the two will give you the best power increase but sadly a fuel injected, turboed, nitroused, computer controlled 4 lunger will still never stand up to the power of those old big-bored dinosaurs of days gone past: Chrysler hemi block, 2 magnetos (how quaint, technology from the turn of last century) topped with a big blower and mechanical fuel injection will propel a car to 3 second quarter miles...all from an engine pushing well over 7 h.p. per cid.
