Ok, So I've got myself 2 Dell NX3000 servers with 10TB of storage each with a raid 0,1,5,10 card

I want to throw them in my VM network cluster.

I'm looking for opinions of what to use to push the storage. Anyone have experience with openfiler or should I just make it an iSCSI target using windows 2008?

I'm concerned more with reliability than speed as these will hold a lot of VMs that will serve movies and music

Would you make them one big volume or split them up?



I have an ESXI 5 cluster that I use to run a few servers and I get all my hardware when companies are done with their leases so I've got quite a bit with it but I'm new to the redundant SAN game.

Any tips on making them redundant with each other?
I've got a dell 710 and a 2 dell 2950s that are the ESXI hosts etc...

why virtualize your storage? just curious.

To me it sounds like you're adding complexity to something without seeing much benefit.

Why not just install your favorite storage OS on the bare metal?
 
I run the VMware cluster as a test lab and i also run my own mail server, dns, media server blah blah. Really just geek hobby stuff for fun.

I know it's not the most efficient way to actually use the storage for home use It's more a project so I can learn the storage and get my certifications. Just wondering if anyone out there had any opinions on the matter

I'll probably post up what I do with it when I actually do it.


I also have a whole Cisco lab, that's how I got my CCNP cartification.

I have an awesome apartment that I don't have to pay for the electricity :D

You may use one Dell as shared storage, prefer NFS and the other for ESXi.
I would use any ZFS OS (best Solaris/ Illumos based), not Openfiler nor Win Server
You may need another disk controller if your Controller cannot work as HBA

You may also go 2 x all-in-one
(Virtual ESXi server + virtualized ZFS SAN in a box), your Dells should work
use the Raid controller for ESXi and add another HBA like a LSI 9211 or IBM 1015 for Storage use.
