storage question for SATA drives

For purley storage purposes (meaning videos, mp3s and pictures), which would be the best type of drive to use, SATA 150 or SATA 3gb/s? 3gb/s seems faster at first glance, but a friend said 3gb/s is all most motherboards can handle at max or something.

I dont need raptor speed, just something faster enough to load a lot of videos and music. also, is any one sata type generally cheaper than the other?

I'm aiming for a Terabyte system and it'd be nice to get past the proformance question before i start comparing the cost effectivness of getting 5x250's vs 4x320's.

also, i'm getting this mobo, can it even handle the 3gb/s ones, considering it says it supports SATA 150 and II but no mention of 3gb/s...?

but SATA 3gb/s is not SATA 2.

are there any actual honest-to-goodness SATA II drives out there right now? i think someone said WD has one, but i dont see it on new egg (it doesn't even let you select an SATA II option when searchingfor hard drives)

No. Because SATA II DOES NOT EXIST. It's a marketing term used by WD to sell their SATA 3Gb/s drives. Click here for more info.

ok.. so... no such thing as SATA II, because the 'II' actually stands for two words, and not for the roman numeral 2, right?

oook.... soooooo... back to my origonal question, for storage purposes only, which would be the best type of drive to get, SATA150 or SATA3gb/s?

SATA-II, SATA 2, etc. Doesn't exist. SATA 3Gb/s DOES exist, though. And unless you're simultaniously accessing 3 or more hard drives, you will not notice a speed difference.

Hard drives these days can transfer up to 90MB/s (And that's ultra-high-end SCSI stuff, there). So you're in a car capable of 90MPH, on a freeway where the speed limit is 150MPH. You can't go fast enough to break the law. If they raise the speed limit to 300MPH, your car isn't any faster. You still can't break the law.

(Car = Hard drive, 150MPH = SATA150, 300MPH = SATA 3Gb/s... Analogies. Gotta love em.)

You can get either drive, neither one will saturate the SATA bus. Personally, I'd look for a good price/gig ratio, and not be concerned with stuff like that. If you want a fast drive, first thing you need to look for is spindle speed. 10000RPM > 7200RPM. The next thing you're looking for is cache size. 16MB cache > 8MB. Beyond that... Most new drives are created equal. Check the sticky at the top of this forum for good buys and advice
