Storage on ESXi

Hi.

I'm configuring my new NAS server with ESXi, or at least I'm testing how it works. I have 2x120GB Intel 510 i was planing on using in RAID1. And then the storage that will be devided in 2. 1 for main storage 1 for backup and IP cam recording.

The question is what is the best configuration.

I can make a RAID 1 with the 2 SSDs with a total of 120GB or RAID 0 for better performance and 240GB space. The put ESXI and the VMs on that.

In any case i need a backup.

I can also make a split so ESXI and VMs are on 2 different disks / RAIDs but how much is ESXI really using the disk when running?

ESXi itself uses very little space, and doesn't really touch the disk when running (most of the files it uses are cached in memory and updated to disk periodically if anything changes.) No reason you can't just install ESXi on a usb flash drive, and use the SSD for vm storage (except slightly slower boot time).

Thank you. So any usb drive will be fine? It docent have to be very fast? how much space is needed?

I would think pretty much any usb flash drive should work, if one happens not to, go to best buy and try again? I have an 8GB drive, and it's hardly using more than 2GB... The config files and such are all in ram, so if you change a setting or whatever, it gets written out to disk every 10 minutes (AFAIK), so no, speed doesn't matter except maybe when you boot...

Sounds good. I just remember something about ESXi needs the same space available as RAM on the system but i guess not :D

Hmmm, you are probably thinking of vswp, but that usually gets stored with the virtual machines (e.g. not on your flash drive...)

You are absolutely right, that was what i was thinking about, it was just remotely in my mind. Thanks again I'll try with a USB and see how it goes.

Hi Freak1

Got an unrelated question - I see you have x8dah with ESXi running on it. I'm trying to setup pretty much the same box with few differences, though facing very strange problem - getting "processor apparently halted for XXX seconds" in the vmkernel log. Also it's noticeable that the box (and the VMs) at times respond very fluky. Strange thing is that the unresponsive periods are aliquot to circa 1500ms, i.e. 1.5s then 3s, then 4.5s, then 6s and so on. So, wondering whether you've done any special BIOS setup on your motherboard to make it running without problems.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Juso,

Does this go away when you disable the "C1E Support" option in the BIOS (Advanced -> Processor and Clock Options)?

Hi TLB.

No, it doesn't - gave it a try already, no effect at all. Also, I've see it's mainly AMD based system that don't live well with C1E enabled, mine is Intel E5620 based. So, still puzzled .
