I am looking for a new (high end) Nikon or Canon digital camera and was wondering if there is a storage media type that is prefered over the other? Also if you can recommend some cameras from the two I mentioned above, please feel free!

Like media for backups, or media as in flash cards? Sandisk Ultra II cards are pretty good and inexpensive.

As for cameras, if you go Nikon check out the D200 or the D80, and for Canon look into the 5D or the 30D.

I purchased a Canon Rebel XT 10 MP EOS camera. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Good camera, it only supports CF cards AFAIK.

CompactFlash is still pretty much the standard format used on dSLR cameras, though there are a few that use SD cards (like the EOS 1d Mark II, which uses both CF and SD), and probably a few that support xD memory (most likely the Fuji and Olympus lines).

I have 5.5 GB of CF memory that I use in my camera - 512 MB Lexar 80x, 1 GB Kingston Elite 50x, and 2x2 GB Kingston Elite 50x that I got for $100 combined.

I would suggest say a couple of 2 to 4 gig cards. I like to keep a back up card myself. I have Lexars which work well enough. Get whichever card is supported at its write speed. Exceeding the cameras buffer speed is useless because, it will only write to the card at that speed. Your wite speed should be at the back of the book in the specs.
