I have a 640GB HD and a first generation Crucial c300 120GB HD as my boot disk with 100GB partitioned.

My Boot disk uses 90GB regularly and is of no concern as it still works better than a HDD even though it is noticeably slower than when I first bought it or last reformatted.

I want help choosing HDD drives so I can store media and work files. I planned to get 2x2TB HD's running in Raid 1 using the motherboard in my sig. Should I stick to that plan, or is there a better one? Also since 6TB drives are being released, should i wait until they hit the market and drop the prices, if any, at all?

Would RAID1 make it so my huge mkv files lag when read?
 
I wouldn't bother with 2TB drives anymore, as it seems that 3TB/4TB drives are the sweet spot right now. I would just pick whatever line you can afford from whatever manufacturer you like.

I don't think they make hard drives slow enough so that even the largest mkv file would lag in RAID1.

Make sure you include proper backups in your new plans. RAID is never a backup.
 
Totally agree about the backup suggestion. I use crashplan for my offsite and a onsite NAS for local backups.

In my 13 years of PC usage I've had 2 HD's crash, with my first one being the one that hurt the most. But its been 6 years since I've had any problems and I currently use a first gen Crucial 120GB SSD and a 640GB WD Black.

I'll keep my eye out on 2 HD's for raid 1, no lag on video streams?

I'll keep my 640GB HD, but should I get a new SSD? This one still works, loads slower (not reformatting anymore), but still is as responsive as an SSD should be.

2 4TB HD's for $300ish would be great, any advice on what I should do/look for? I'm not using this PC to hold sensitive documents/media that I cannot afford to lose. However, I want to keep things safe and carry over the components to a new PC setup when the X99 motherboards come out.
 
WD blacks, green or reds. Prices are creeping down right now, I'm about to buy both a green and a red for my nas/plex/whatever server.
 
I'm a big fan of seagate hybrid drives, but anything you buy 1TB+ is going to stream media at 100+MB/s. The only lag you'll see is the initial seek lag when you start the file RAID1 or not.
