Stop text message from being sent as iMessage

I have a friend who about a month ago switched from an iPhone to an Android phone. The problem is when I send a text to her, my iPhone keeps thinking her phone is an iPhone, and tries to send it as an iMessage first. Is there any way to reset the number so it is sent as a standard text message instead?

I have deleted our previous conversations and removed her from my contacts list and re-added her.

I don't want to turn off iMessage across the board. I still want to use it for friends with iPhones.

Did you try removing her from your phone and icloud contacts? Then start a new text message to her number.

For my phone, all I've ever had to do was edit the contact and change "iphone" to "mobile" next to their number. It's worked for 3 people so far.

I removed her from iCloud and re-added her. Still have the problem. She has always been listed as mobile and not iphone next to her name. All my friends with iPhones are also labeled as mobile so I am pretty sure it is just a label.
