4/8/2004: A new bill introduced would require all new computers to have built-in "policeware" to monitor your actions.
These Guys are taking a stand. You should too.

A petition against Some changes the Gov wants to make.
http://www.stopfcc.com/

WHAT IS THE CBDTPA?

The CBDTPA is a bill (S. 2048) proposed in Congress by Senators Fritz Hollings (D-SC) and Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), along with Senators Daniel Inouye (D-HI), John Breaux (D-LA), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). The acronym stands for "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act". Note that the CBDTPA was originally known as the "SSSCA" while in draft form.

WHAT WOULD THIS LAW DO?

The law would force all new personal computers and digital home entertainment devices sold in the United States to have government-approved "policeware" built-in.

This policeware would restrict your use of copyrighted material on these devices -- including music files and CD's, video clips, DVD's, e-books, and more.

Think you'd be able to get around the law by removing the policeware from your personal computer? Think again -- anyone who defies the government by disabling or tampering with the policeware on their own computer, in the privacy of their own home or business, would also face up to five years in the slammer. Since alternative operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD would most likely refuse to incorporate government policeware into their code, users of these open-source systems would also be eligible for hard time.

If we have any hope of keeping government policeware off of our personal computers and home entertainment devices, we must act quickly and decisively. For starters, you can sign our petition opposing the CBDTPA, contact your representative in Washington, tell a friend about this site, and put a banner on your own web site.

I'm sure seprately sold parts that are crucial to making up the PC, like the mother board, would have it on them too.

I agree that there will be ways around it, but if something like that bill gets passed, that's a violation to privacy. (in my opinion).

Thanks for posting.

Don't think this is appropriate forum however.

Not by the sounds of it...

It'd be on the OS, the HDD, the MB, maybe the memory...

So anyway you look at it, it'd still be there, and there's no way around it...

Its called the Trustworthy computing for MS.

I am glad I am not living in the USA. There is so much digital censorship there its not funny.

I'm going to call shens on this one....

Even if this is the wrong forum, i knew this would get the most publicity, and this absolutly needs to be heard, and this site is one of the biggest forum sites i know of, and you guys being computer freaks, you gotta hear about it.

I hope its a joke, but if they can sue a 12 year old girl with $500,000 fines for downloading about 15 songs, is it that hard to believe?

....got a second source for this information other than the web page listed? I'm all for being aware, but there's power in facts, and incorrect facts don't help the credibility of these guys....

They can't force that kind of shit on people whether they think they can or not. There would be a political holocaust if they even tried. They might be able to stick some crap like this on OEM machines from Dell and HP but the day they make it mandatory on custom built systems is the day i quit paying a single dime on another piece of hardware.

I've heard about this previously, last fall I think my friends mom was talking about this. Shady indeed.

this is the worst shit ive heard in a long time. though i thinks its going to take a lot for them to get this to pass. if its does pass then i think im going to upgrade to the highest grade computer i can before the law is implemented, get some vapor phase cooling, and overclock and hope the machine last around 3 years. by then they should have something where you pay 50 bucks a month to download whatever you want.

edit: sticky this. this is vastly important to the [H]ardforum

Theres one on slashdot too. It must still be pending since i saw nothing about it getting shot down.

Seriously id move my business and my family to canada heh. They're a little more liberal there. It would also throw my business down the drain. I remember reading about this in the inq awhile ago. I forget which but one company basically told them to eat doo doo. I think it was intel .

really. and what are we going to do if it passes? because if it passes, that means enough politicans (yes, politicans, sadly america has never been about what the PEOPLE want) like it, and theres always going to be asshats to follow if theyre voted out

Not really that concerned about it. Any kind of "snooping" or restrictive gadgetry has always been shot down by the public as soon as it makes it anywhere to be voted on or implemented. As far as it being illegal to tamper with or disable it, it's also illegal to copy software, music, and movies and they too carry a Federal Law with high fines and jail terms. So of course nobody ever copies that stuff because of the law. If it's real the public will never allow it.

Agreed. Besides, people have to much porn on their comps that they want to protect from the government. They'd shut down this law when the vote is initiated.

Well I think the chances of this passing are extemely remote. Probably you will get the "old skool" politicians if you will saying how much it is a violation of privacy, and how nobody knows exactly what the firmware or w/e it is would monitor, and how.

You never know what else it could be used for. (The biggest botnet evah perhaps).

I think the part about making the use of open source operating systems illegal is highly unlikely aswell...

What a fucking load of shit. There is no way this would ever happen, I don't even know why people even *try* to push this shit out there. I thought they were doing better things with their time, apparantly not.

for those people who think this guy is full of it, this has been circulating around the media for a few weeks now. The first I heard of it was that the government was going to require ISP's to keep a built in backdoor to their systems so that the government/police would have easy access to monitor what you were doing on the web. They would need a "reason" of course, but considering I can get pulled over because a cop "thinks" I'm doing something wrong, I could see how this could be abused. Of course the ISP's were completely against it because you dont want to leave ANY access to your systems from outside sources. If one person can use it, another person can abuse it. And I dont think we can trust the government to create a completely secure backdoor

Of course this is a complete violation of our privacy, and finally the bigger companies are stepping up to the plate and saying NO to the government/authorities when it comes to things like this. ISP's saying no to the RIAA when asked to release confidential user information, and I'm sure the hardware manufacturers are going to be completely against this as well. Talk about a breach of security, imagine some third party figures out how to exploit this "backdoor". The government would be at such a liablity for lawsuits its staggering. I dont think this will fly, but its just another stab by big brother trying to get in our homes.

Its getting scarier and scarier being an American, and I say that with as little humor as possible.

Well you'd think if that did happen, one would be able to sue the US gov't for being a monopoly ;). Just a thoght...

<sarcasm>Yeah, I remember going down to my local poll an voting on the DMCA and the Patriot Act.</sarcasm>
Our only chance to shoot this down is to write our congressmen. I have written letters to both Arizona reps about this months ago (I think I saw it on /. then)

too many people are completly ignorant about how a computer works, and many are scared of them to begin with. my parents no nothing about their "hard drive (computer)" and are scared to death of having financial information on their. had me back it all up on a cd a few weeks ago. basically when they hear about something that gives the someone access to monitor their computer, they are going to freak out. they dont like anyone having control of their computer. btw on a side note, im assuming there is going to be some sort of internet requirement for them to be able contact your computer to tell if it is using ilegal content. you could always copy things that one would not metion here for the sake of rules on a computer that is not connected to the net or any network with a machine on the net. no way for them to know without comming in to you house and looking at you machine.

This is why our governement is so corrupt. Instead of spending time trying to do things for the homeless, the poor, the people with AIDS, and so forth you've got these idiot companies that want to be billionares instead of millionares. Who gives a crap if some of their software gets pirated. There are more then enough honest sapps that will pay for everything, even Windows so they aren't going to ever go broke as long as there is a demand for it. Businesses HAVE to pay for all of their stuff so they are getting more then enough revenue. And considering they send like 90% of their work overseas they are operating at the lowest costs ever.

And like it costs that much to burn their software onto a CD and stick it in a little retail package  .

not to mention, i know if they made a program like bit torrent legal if you pay a flat 40 or 50 bucks a month, i probably would end up paying for it. sure its a lot of money, but its peace of mind, and hell they could get 100,000+ people to eventually sign up over a year or two. money could be split up based on download. aka 50,000 downloads of windows of a total of 100,000 downloads that month, microsoft gets half the money they take in. plus its a cheap alternative, and rig up some sort of way to buy serial numbers form companies for cheap. basically you do all the work to get the app/game/movie, at NO cost to the company and they get paid for it. i think i stumbled on to something here.

what digital holocaust? most people don't care. they run happily along with 10 spyware and 10 adware programs installed. MOST PEOPLE DON'T CARE THAT THEY ARE LOSING THEIR FREEDOMS. It scares me just how people accept what they're told.

Man things just get worse and worse.. maybe we should stage a coup?

This sucks man, just another way for the governement to pork into our personal lives. This is most absurd..... ggrrrrrr.... i'm siging up

Alright, maybe I should take that back... at a time like this, with that "Patriot act, ie, bend the fuck over without a warrant" type of bullshit going on, yeah, then it could be a possibility in this post 9/11 world....

People have been trading freedom from government for what they think is personal security in the US since the 1930's and its not gonna stop anytime soon.

If you haven't or didn't contact your congressman about DMCA, then you are the only one to blame. As far as the Patriot Act it's not even in the same class. That is a direct result of a Terrorist attack that killed several thousand people. How about at least keep the argument in the same basic arena.

Im with burningrave101...

Buy the fastest computer without policeware and get vaporphase and overclock it and use it intill they discontinue policeware.

will they still be able to track if you're not on the net? because i sure as hell would disc. my cable to stay away from those bastards

notice how most of the people who proposed it are 'Crats:eek:

I hope Kerry loses this election:D (although it wont affect the bill too much)

also, i consider the government an "internet predator" which seems to be the thing to vote against now a days, but my 15 year old ass cant vote yet:(
