Stock cooler not cutting it?

I have a Socket 775 P4 3.0Ghz and it seems to be running way too hot. I have a Antec Superlanboy case, and I recently cleaned out my heatsink/fan. I cleaned off the old heat goo and replaced it with Artic Silver 5. That was about three weeks ago.

It idles at about 55-60c when it's 80f in my room. If I do anything that goes over 40% CPU or so, my temp goes all the way up to 70c and my fan goes full blast (very annoying because its right next to me.)

Then, as soon as I quit my game or whatever, it goes down very quickly to 55-60c.

This doesn't seem right to me since I haven't overclocked it or anything. Any help? Thanks in advance. :D
 
The LGA775 stock HSF has a pretty weird mounting method. Make sure all those push pins are in all the way, and you turn the pins into the lock position.
 
Mine does the same thing. Temps are lower than yours, but not by much. The selection of LGA775 fans is less than steller. Most you have to buy some mounting kit to use the fan. Adding yet another $15 to a $40+ hsf.

Agreed, they are a bit of a pain, you gotta remember the space of a hair is enough to create a bad thermal bond.


 
The heatsink is on very securely on there, I'm sure that all the pins are in.

So that's just the way LGA775's are? If it continues to be a problem in the winter, I may end up buying a new HSF. I'd really rather not though, because $50 is a lot of money to me.

The main reason I got a 3.0Ghz p4 is because I heard it easily OC's to 3.4. I'm not so sure I want to do that now if it's already running so hot :(
 
Well if you are sure its secure, you've got some sort of underlying issue. If you're running it stock, and it's getting hot, something is way wrong. Those heatsinks are pretty good a normal speeds. Good airflow? Thermal bond ok? Something is amiss. Which mobo are you using?

My case is the Antec Superlanboy. Here's a picture:

It has Two 120mm fans, one in the front and one in the back. The front 120mm blows a lot of air when it's on full power (I have a fan controller).
I have positioned the cords inside the best I could to try and get the best airflow possible.

As for the thermal bond, I used Artic Silver 5. I followed the directions exactly, and I used Acetone and Q-tips to clean off the old stuff. I was extra careful not to scratch the copper or leave any spots. When I took off the HSF, I cleaned all the dust in the HS with a co2 can.

My mobo is the Intel D925XCV.

I really appreciate your help. The fan noise really makes it unpleasant to do anything with a high CPU requirement.
 
Intel mobo? Try going into your bios and turn off CPU Fan Throttling. I've seen this many times on Intel boards, your mount is prolly perfect. That will make the CPU fan run full throttle all the time, but that shouldn't create much noise compared to the 120s spinning up to full. Let me know.

 
When my CPU temp goes up to 70c my HS fan goes to 5k rpm. It's high pitched and out-sounds my 120's no problem. It almost sounds like it's struggling to keep the temperature down.

I will try turning off CPU Fan Throttling. Thanks for your help and I'll let you know :D
 
I went into my BIOS and all I could find was

Cpu Fan Control [Enable/Disable]
Fan Control [Enable/Disable]
Lowest Fan Speed [Slow/Off]

Did I look in the wrong spot? :confused:
 
I would re apply the AS5 1 more time. But, This time clean the old up with alcohol instead of acetone. It never hurts to be sure that its done right.\

Acetone does leave residue, I would definately clean it with alchohol this time around

Yes you did, turn off Cpu fan control first. That will make your heatsink run full power. If that doesn't help, turn off fan control, and all fans attached to the mobo/or a sensor will run full power, I know its noisy but the new Intel cores to get a bit warm.

 
Mine was running really hot and I found out the thermal paste wasn't totally even under the heatsink. There were small "pockets" that were causing the overheating.
 
Ok i was gonna go for the Antec LAN Boy...
but then decided to go with the Antec TX640B....

The Lan Boy has only 2 120fans...

Ok if u look at ur lan boy case, u would see that the 120 exhust fan is right next to the stock intel cooler.... so whats happening there is that the Intel cooler is trying to suck air down toward the heatsink... and yet the exhust wont let it, cause its pull the air that was going to head toward the intel fan out of the case... If that makes sense...

Thats why they made the new CPU air duct/tube... which brings in air from the side of the case to the CPU...


Now i would suggest that u reduce the exhust fan 120mm... to the least rpm that u can... this will allow the Intel cooler to pull air faster and first before the 120 exhust... since the 120 exhust is working slower and less powerful...


Its hard to explain,... so hope u can make heads and tails out of it... and let us know what happens!

AHA! According to the above poster, you've got a vaccuum goin. Try disconnecting that 120mm all together and see how it does. If it is indeed exaust he is prolly right.
 
That could be the problem, because I also have a 520w PSU sucking air from up top.

Maybe I could reverse my exhaust fan so that it blows air in? Then it would just be my PSU sucking air out.

that might cause your case temps to increase a bit, though, but it might lower the cpu temp.

you could also try cutting a hole in the side of the case (or in the window), positioned over the CPU--ala Intel TAC...it might help to have some forced fresh air coming right over the cpu fan..
 
I'd really rather not mangle my side case panel. I don't cut plastic very well :( .

I turned my fan up all the way and I can hear it over everything easily. I don't know what else to do :(
 
Well u can just open the side panel for testing...
remove it and see if it makes a difference!
 
Generally you want exaust at the top, so it vents hot air. If anything maybe just disconnect the 120 and see how it goes. Running it without the case on will mess up the airflow and certainly will decrease your chances of getting it cool.

 
Strange, I took off the side panel and the cpu temp went down to 50c. Then I put it back on and it went up to 55c ish. I will try turning off the exhaust fan next.

Now for the long run solution...
u can try and get a CPU Cooler Duct/Tube, and cut out a hole on the side of the case... which will not only provide cool air directly to the CPU... but also it will prevent other fans from getting in the way of the cpu's airflow (wont create a vacuum)

OK so GENERALLY when you don't have airflow disruptions, its bad to run the case open, ok? ;) Honestly though he's prolly right, you will need a duct.
 
Did u try turning off or reducing speed of the exhust 120 fan?
and checking the temps?

Dont worry.... first buy a nice CPU duct.... then measure the diameter of the circle and cut the side panel.... (exactly above the CPU)....
Then drill four holes in the right place for the screws....
U also need to buy a grill that would prevent snooping fingers or other objects from getting into the duct...

But i would first recommend u try reducing the speed of the exhust fan...

But only do it if u want to.... dont listen to any of us... listen to voice inside ur head... :)
