Still worth getting a 5870?

I've heard ATI is planning on releasing new cards this year, do you think it would be a bad move to buy a 5870 now?

depends on what you have now. i hear the hd 6xxx will be coming out in oct-nov ish.

What card do you currently have now?

I picked up a used 5870 from the FS section for $305 with lifetime warranty transfer. Too good of a deal for me to wait for the 6 series. I upgraded from 8800GTX so it was a very nice boost...also went Eyefinity :).

I have put my whole upgrade on hold until end september because the 5870 (not sure which one yet) is on there, i hear 6000 end of 2010 and some people think a 5890 is in the works for 2010 and 6000 is Q1 2011. I'm leaving it till late september early october ish to hear more but im so tempted to jsut order one of the 2 5870's im looking at, it's quite annoying.

There will always be something right around the corner. Think about if you wait and then they do come out Q1 2011 you will have waited 6+ months. You need to decide if you want to wait. The longer you wait the better card you get, but you might have given up play time.

I went from a X800XL to a 4870x2 because I kept putting it off until it was just untolerable playing games.

Like the others have stated, what do you have currently and what are your needs?

I'm rebuilding around dual 512MB 4870s until the next [second] gen of DX11 cards. Unless I find a sweet deal on a 58XX series.

No, its not a bad move to buy a 5870 now. Its going to be at least 6 months before the 6xxx series is out.

I went from a 6800 GT (AGP!) to a 5870, probably skipped like 3-4 generations. I missed out on alot of good gaming....

If you wait for something better... Well you'll always be waiting. There's always something around the corner in the computer world.

The question should be is it worth it in relation to what you have?

Ultimately it comes down to games or if you want to eyefinity yourself =D

Are you playing any games that are stuttering with what you have? I've got the upgrade bug and I think I can get by on the 4870s until 'that game' comes out and the only game I am looking forward to is SWTOR and I won't need a killer rig to run it =D

I would wonder more about an upcoming price cut than the potential for a 6xxx. The 470 is roughly the performance equal of the 5870, but can now be found for under $300, while the 5870 is still around $375.

Im of the strong belief that you might as well get what you want, when you want it.

No matter how long you wait, no matter how thorough you shop, no matter what strategies you implement, the second you click "checkout", something newer, faster and cheaper will come out.

I would agree with both comments.

However, these dual 4870s have lasted me for a long time and I want to make a repeat investment and if that means waiting for a price drop or a new series (or a sweet deal) I'll wait!

THe 4870's with 512 megs are really going to hurt in newer games.

I'm looking foward to TOR myself but there are many games like

Fallout 3 New Vegas
Crysis 2
Fable 3

and I'm sure there are others.

I also want to play them all in eyefinity. TOr is far enough away that I will enjoy buying a new pc for it when it comes out. We wont see it till Spring 2011 and thats if there is no delays. I will hopefully have a bulldozer machine in the waiting for it with perhaps a pci-e 3.0 set up.

Nah you can plan around this, usually the approximate release schedules are known, full product cycles tend to be ~18 months with refreshes in between that. Full product cycles usually bring approximately 2x more raw horsepower.

Once you're used to the cycles and used to buying components to compensate for this such as PSUs that can last more than 1 generation, it's pretty easy to make smart buying decisions.

Having said that, i'm also a believer that you should get what you want when you want it :)

Well if you are gaming fine right now I would say wait, if you are having problems running any games just get an 5870

470 is definitely not the performance equal of the 5870, though the 5870 should be ~$340 right now.

It's not an equal but it does get awful close and now that the 470 is down to $300, it may mot be worth it to spend $80 or more for 5 more frames. So yeah, the 5870 definitely needs to be down to $330-350.

i dont know if im too late but i think sli gtx460 would be a really good buy. preforms better than the gtx480 plus you get two cards for hte price of the 5870

The first models will be the value models AFAIK. Actual better performing models might be Q1 2011.

I thought the first ones to come out were said to be mid range. If that were to be the case then it'd be fantastic for consumers since it is relatively close (loosely speaking) to the release date of Nvidia's midrange DX11 offerings - GTS 450 said to be Sept 13 by either Semi/Fud although the post seems to be missing now lol.

Edit:
Found it @ http://semiaccurate.com/2010/08/03/nvidia-gt-425m-tips-listings/
Says GF106 due Sept 13 with GF108 due sometime between now and then.

I'd say wait for the 6000 series if it's less than a month away. Price cuts will definitely come.

Well my beloved 4870x2 has been running on just one core for some months now because it is defective and it has been difficult to run newer games in the level of eye candy I like.

Maybe I should just go and get a 5970. It feels a waste to buy a 5870 when it will have just the same performance as the 5870.

If you can wait a couple months (rumor mill says 68x0 series is up for a mid-to-late October launch) I would do it. If not, try to find a deal because with the GTX 480's price dropping like a rock it's simply not worth MSRP anymore.

I'm looking to get a new GPU soon... so does anyone have any facts on the upcomming 6xxx series?

I don't want to get something that's going to be outdated in a month or two... not to mention price cuts

nothing def, but its not likely to be all that. when ATI found out that they were not going to have 28nm available they scrapped the original plan and settled for hybrid product. you should see better clocks, more efficient chips, and some better scaling. nothing earth shattering though. and the high end may not show itself until 2011

i like my 5870 crossfire. i would like 2gb cards but for the price i paid (about 645 for 2) i'm fine with it. i push 3 24 inch monitors so i guess im kinda stuck needing beefy cards :p :D

I hate it when people say this. "Just buy what you need now, there's always new stuff coming out, blah blah blah." Maybe that works for you, but you ≠ everyone. Obviously if you need it now, then you don't really have a choice. But there are those of us who like to be on the edge of the upgrade curve. If you're looking (read: not immediately needing) for an upgrade, and you know updates are coming fairly soon, then why waste money on the current stuff? Please stop telling people "there's always new stuff around the corner." No shit there's always new stuff around the corner. What they want to know is where product X is in the upgrade timeframe. If they needed, obviously they would have bought it by now and not bothered asking in the first place.

I was thinking about getting at gtx 460 but then one of my friends asked me if I want his hd 4870 x2 cuz it runs way too hot in his alienware case and he cant play crysis on it cuz it over heats. I got it for 120 bucks and now I got another friend who wants to sell me another 4870 x2 for 120 cuz he says after hours of continous gameplay he gets distortion. I kinda wanna gamble that because I only play for like an hour max sometimes. Two hd 4870 x2's for 240 make me wanna forget about anything until northerenislands come out next year, which is the totally new architecture by ati.

If you have money for a 6xxx series then wait

If not, get the 5870.. it will last you for a couple years

If you're not in a hurry and with oct/nov just around the corner, then it doesn't hurt to wait, but if you really want a piece of hardware now, then you are not making a wrong decision regardless of what comes out in October or November. If you're truly smart, you can have the best of both worlds, buy the 5870 now, then sell it, use the proceeds + some more money to buy the new generation when it launches. That's honestly the best case scenario right there. Also you can decide to keep it and just enjoy Crossfire if you buy the new launch card.

Regardless, there's not many games out there that are popular that will kill a 5870, except Metro 2033, which is a mediocre game at best.
