still looking for 19inch CRT

I'm sure those screens support 1024x768, seems already monitors made over 10 years ago supported this res at 100Hz.

I wouldn't buy a CRT online. There are too many things that can go wrong with 1.) A used CRT and 2.) Shipping a CRT. Instead, buy one in person and make sure you inspect it while its turned on for any defects.

any thoughts on this one? is it shadowbox or the other thing? hah. thanks guys. also, keep in mind i want 100hz+ at 1024x768. thanks.

edit: just came accross this one too

Don't get either.

The Dell monitor is from 2001. Too old. I've tried various (even high-end) CRTs from 2000, 2001 and 2002 and they're just too worn out.
And most CRTs back then were kinda bad anyway (the tech became better a few years later when higher resolutions like 1280x960 became more common, demanding better quality and performance).

The ViewSonic is also too old. I have a newer model ViewSonic CRT that came after that model (which is from 2004 it seems), I think made in 2005, and while it was awesome when new and has very high brightness and strong colors, after 3 years of usage it started turning very blurry.

Why not just get one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220765320317&category=80053&_trksid=p5197.c0.m619 ?? (it was posted in your other thread)

Looks like there's 4 left as of writing this.

I'd buy one if I didn't live on the other side of the ocean.

That's obvious, when you are running it at 100% contrast and brightness and high res and highest refresh rate.

In fact I would consider to buy this, new CRT is something rarely seen today, the bigger the better and they don't have a native resolution so you still can run 1024 on it.

100 contrast won't hurt it. 100 brightness on the other hand, WILL, as will running outside of factory resolution and refresh rate specs...

What is anyone thinking running a monitor at 100 brightness anyway? Even if you don't professionally calibrate the correct black level is around 50, setting it to 100 you should notice even without any kind of measuring that the pic looks totally screwed up, but I guess that just doesn't phase some people...

It seems that people have just gotten used to dark LCDs for the past few years (with AG coatings that make them even darker) so when they bumb into something brighter it feels odd.

Some LCDs I suppose, (haven't seen one) maybe have it so that XX in the brightness setting is the maximum, say it's 50, and, so, going over that washes out color... Contrast is very often like that, that some amount under 100 is actually maximum...

With CRTs (the ones I've used and can remember) they sure have it like that though, so that max is 50 for example. And that is still max brightness, so putting it on 100 doesn't actually increase it.

On 99% of LCDs there's not much point in not using maximum brightness, especially as most have rather weak backlighting (an LCD rated to above 300cd/m2 is somewhat rare, and many of those rated to 300 actually don't reach that level).

I had the Dell 2209WA and one of the great disappointments with it was how dark it was at 100% brightness. Felt as if there was something wrong with it... Like, "Umm, hello, what's the problem here - I just put it on 100%, but it feels like 50%".

real1g, where approximately are you located? I may be willing to sell my A90f+ as it has just been sitting doing nothing since getting my flat panel. It looks just like the one you posted here. I have it packed away in its original box and packaging, not sure how many hours I put on it but it seemed to still be running good when I removed it from my desk. It is old like Tamahagane mentions but PM me and let me know if you may be interested, I am generally in the 92630 zip code.

*note: Its been a while since I have used this CRT so I am unfamiliar what refreshes it use to hit, so basically I can't recall if it had the capability of 100hz+ at 1024x768, I'd have to research when I'm not tired :p

This should be mentioned; that there's not much point in avoiding a larger monitor -- The larger the CRT the higher res it is designed to run at, and thus it will also be capable of higher Hz... For example 1280x960 on a 19" may only go to 75hz, but on a 22" the same resolution can work at higher Hz.

A 19" (18" viewable) is optimally run at 1280x960 (or maybe slightly higher, but that would have to be a custom res because 1600x1200 is much too big a step because it makes the dot pitch way too low), while a 21" or 22" (20" viewable) monitors optimal res would be somewhere between 1400x1050 and 1600x1200. While on the 19" CRT, 1280x960 may only reach 75hz. Whereas on the 22" it may reach 85hz. Likewise, 1024x768 on the 19" may reach 85hz, on the 22" it may reach 100+hz. In other words, larger CRT = better chance of higher Hz.

If you have the option to buy a 22", especially if it's NEW or in good condition, then there's not much point in hesitating.

If you don't like the larger picture for whatever reason, you can just adjust that so it appears as a 19" would.

Larger CRT = more ability/room/power to tweak around with stuff including custom res and Hz.

I'm using a Dell P991 trinitron that was made in 2001 and it's going on 10+ years
I have a backup I bought last year in Mint condition for 60.00 =) in the closet if it dies and a identical PC if my PC dies.
I use a Led Lcd for gaming I wasn't able to use Lcd monitor for almost a decade.
I can use them now but only for a day or two or so a week for gaming.

I wish they made CRTs still or SEDs anyway the Dell P 991 Trinitron is way better then that Viewsonic =)
I used to own that Viewsonic I had two of them and the image quality just sucked don't let those little birds on the corner fool ya.

Ah you want 100 HRZ it's possible on the P991 but you would be forcing it it's native is 85
