Still can't get IDE disk to work.

I currently have a SATA Raptor 74gb as my main disk. Never installed drivers for it or anything because it worked right out of the box on the fresh setup. I have 2 optical drives on the first IDE port of the motherboard, one a master, one a slave. I'm trying to get an 80gb storage drive to work but it just won't. Originally it only showed up as 32gb, now it won't show up at all.

I believe the jumper settings, from left to right, are limit capacity, cable select, slave, master. Don't hold me to that, but I think its the same on all harddrives anyway. When I put the jumper on the rightmost jumper (master), I get a media test error. When I put the jumper on the second rightmost jumper (slave), I get a media test error. When I put the jumper on Cable Select, I get into Windows, but the drive isn't there. I'm using this IDE drive on the second IDE port of my MSI K8N Neo2 Plat with a single device ATA-133 cable.

Any suggestions?

No, every hard drive MFG is different, and sometimes different even withing a brand.

What drive is it?

Also leave it in Cable Select and see if it shows up in device manager, if so, you need to partion it before you can see it. Go to comptuer management - disk manager to do that.

Some motherboards, depending on the BIOS settings, disable one of the two IDE ports in order to make the SATA ports act as IDE ports. Whip out your motherboard manual, as it should break down the options. My Abit boards all have clear diagrams of how each option affects the drives. Verify that your BIOS is configured correctly, and that the jumpers on the drive are also correct, by visiting the drive's website.
 
What drive is it? With that info we can look up the jumper settings for your specific model.

Ok, it has the "Alternate capacity jumper" enabled. this makes it report itself as a 32GB drive. If you have a jumper on the pins closest to the Molex Power plug it will limit the drive to 32GB.

If it is the only drive on the chain, a jumper on the pins closest to the IDE cable (not the Molex Power) and no other jumpers on it.

Alright. I have the jumper on the pins closest to the IDE and I still see it as 32gb. Computer boots though. Would the computer boot without any jumper at all?

It should, as slave. (unless your IDE controller requires a master when a slave is present, most don't)

It seems like the jumper closest to the Molex Power Plug is stuck shorted for some reason.

Is there any other reason it could be reading 32gb other than that jumper being shorted? I checked the PDF you linked and I didn't see any jumper diagrams. Is there anyway I can fix the short? I'd even rip those jumpers out if I had to, doesn't matter much, I don't need them.

The PDF has the jumper diagrams in it. Page 29/52 in acrobat (19 if printed)

It could be a bad hard drive.. Sense you have a SATA capable MB, I am sure it doesn't have the 32GB limitation, so I can't really think of another reason, unless there are jumpers on the bottom of the circuit board that over ride the main ones, or if the circuit board is getting shorted on your case.

yeah, i'm having the same problem with a seagate... i think the jumpers must be joined somewhere... i dont know.tried it wil any combo of jumpers that there is.. even put it in my xbox and formatted it... still only 32 gigs... i'm in the process of getting it rma'd

The only thing that I could suggest to check is how it's partitioned. But in the Xbox it shouldn't matter since it's a different file system entirely. If the jumper is on Master and it still only shows 32GB, sounds like bad drives to me.
