Steps to turn on a WCing rig?

So the pump must be connected to its own external power source(wall outlet Im assuming) correct? So to before turning on the computer you must turn the pump on first or do most poeple wire them up to turn on by the computers power button?

depends on the pump. If it is a 12V that plugs into your PSU it will turn on when the comp is powered up. If it is a 110V like an Eheim. Hydor. Etc then it plugs directly into the wall and needs to be turned on(plugged in) when the comp is turned on. I just have mine on a power bar with the comp so I turn on the power bar, thus turning on my pump, and then turn on my comp. You can buy 110V to 12V converters or kits to plug the pump into your Comps PSU. Radio shack sells a 110V to 12V converter for $6.00 if you dont mind wiring it yourself.

Since I never turn off my computer I will just let my pump run all the time, and when i need to turn it off just unplug it.

I use a relay for my Hydor.. When the computer turns on the pump turns on..

I use a relay or just leave the pump on 24/7.

Is that bad for the pump to leave it running for months at a time?

Aquarium pumps are designed to run 24/7 for years. I have an eheim that ran for 17 years 24/7 on a fish tank. Constant power cycling actually shortens the life of most pumps but not enough to worry about.

The real risk you are taking is that your water cooling system might leak under pressure and hose your computer. If you build it right that risk is minimal.

if you dont want a 24/7 buy a 12V pump... turns on when your powersupply is on.
