i have a chance to upgrade my video card with EVGA's step-up program, and i'm currently running the GTX 260 as the thread title says. Think the advantages I'd get with a higher card would even be worth it? I'm only playing regular games like L4D, TF2, CS:S, etc. I just want something that'll last me 3-5 years.

Either gtx 285, but its not that great of an upgrade, or you can wait for the new ati 5000 series to come out or the new GeForce GTX300 series to come out adn you won't need to upgrade for a good while

so the 260 will be more than enough for me right now? i was also thinking of paying the extra 40 for the 216 core version of the gtx 260. yay or nay?

Considering that you can get new 260's for under $140 now (last deal I saw personally, maybe $125 now?), I wouldn't pay $40 to upgrade from a 192 to a 216.

How much is the 285 StepUp? The numbers on the 275 are just a hair lower than the 285, so that could also be an option if there's a big difference in StepUp cost.

No, not worth it. 216 is around 5% - 7% better in most games although you won't see a big real world difference (maybe 1-2FPS in Crysis). You can always OC the 192 a little. This may help http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=656&Itemid=29

Personally I'm waiting for the 300 series cards. My 8800GT is coping well enough at 1680 x 1050 in pretty much all games will low AA.

I may consider eVGA when I upgrade, the Step-up option sounds like a good idea
