Anyone here that has a Steelseries Ikari Laser or Optical that can tell me what they honestly think about it? I want a new mouse and am a huge fan of Razer's 3G IR sensor, but am kind of intrigued by the Ikari. Will it track as well as a 3G or at least close to it? How fast can I move it until the sensor malfunctions or becomes imprecise?

Thanks,

13

Who owns this? Come forth! :p

I actually have a 3yr old overheating mouse right now!

I ended up buying the Razer Deathadder and am more than happy with it. It's hands down the best mouse I've ever used!

We'll find out soon enough...I just bit on the laser from buy.com.

Nothing tracks as good as the 3G.

I have the ikari lazer and it tracks better than anything ive used. That list includes: razer death adder, razer boomslang 2007 CE, logi g7, g5 , ms sidewinder and many many mroe gaming mice.

One problem that keeps me from using it over my favorite (g9) is the shape. It is soo comfy but has no side indents and the sides slope downwards, this makes picking it up like picking a penny off the floor every time you pick it up to re-adjust, kind of like having to palm a basketball in order to pick it up. If it had some small indents for grip it would bar none be the best mouse ive used.

I have no problems believing it's a great mouse, but I highly doubt that it tracks better than a 3G.

Better tracking than DA, eh? Nice. I'm looking forward to it. I thought I read a review on techpowerup or ocsomething about it being easy for lo sens guys to pick up and move around. Do you have small/medium hands?

I recently replaced my Razer Copperhead with a Logitech G9. Haven't looked back.

The shape took a little bit of getting used to, but once I did it made a world of difference. Especially with the textured grip.

Damn right handed mouse!

I'd like a Boomslang but $100 for a mouse? I'll pass...Maybe they'll start making red Deathadders :p

Here's another review...

Trusted Reviews

Oddly it states optical as recommended for FPS gamers, but other reviews such as those on bit-tech or techpowerup didn't mention much about that version...

Currently the laser is $20 more...

EDIT: "I played a lot of FPS games with this mouse and it did an extraordinary job both at low and high sensitivity. The fact that it is so versatile is really amazing and it is definitely the first laser mice that I find comfortable and precise to use with a low sensitivity."
-techpowerupreview, laser

They recommend optical over laser, since it is still superior when it comes to tracking and high malfunction speeds. Lasers tend to fail at much lower speeds than opticals (or infrareds since the 3G).

Being a very competitive tournament gamer I am telling you...to me it tracks better than the 3g sensor. I have 2 mice that use the 3g sensor and to be honest they aren't much of an improvement over logi's mx518 sensor oc'd to 1000 polling rate.

Im not sure. 6'3 230lbs. Large hands I guess. I just found I actually have to mentally think about picking it up as it isnt natural like every other mouse I have used. In fact this is the only mouse I have ever used that I felt I actualy had to "try" when i picked it up.

What other 3g mice? Deathadder and it's 3g infr/optical and the Lachesi w/ its 3g laser? The 1st G laser was the MX1000, yes? Then 2G was in the G5? I did not like the tracking in that mouse at all. It felt much less precise than the MX518. So what G is the Ikari's laser? Do we know who made it?

Also, I prefer the sensor/tracking of the Deathadder over the MX518...but I haven't kicked the polling up on the 518...thought it couldn't be done. Do you have a link for the tool?

Hmm, I'm wondering if the reason your having a tough time picking up the mouse's because you rest the middle finger on the wheel. A couple reviewers touched on that. I typically have 2 fingers on the mouse, ring and pinky vs the thumb w/ index/middle on primary/secondary.

Unfortunately, the Ikari has been "chillin'" @ buy.com since Thursday...gonna have to see what's up as the site says ships w/ 1-2 business days...it's been 3. :(

This is definitely the thing you wanna buy from a retail store as it can be so personal too.

What other 3g mice?

There are other 3G choices. The Boomslang CE, the new Diamondback 3G and the Deathadder (Infrared 3G that is. There's also the 3G laser sensor which is in the Lachesis).

I have never used a mouse that was better than the DA, but I have to admit that I never even tried a Ikari laser. I may just have to do that.
It's just so hard to believe that a laser mouse would track so well. If Steelseries pulled it of to actually make a laser sensor mouse that's worth anything compared to an optical or 3G then more power to them. They do make some badass keyboards and decent gaming headsets (most "gaming" headsets on the market suck poopoo), so I guess it's not too far fetched.

You play in tournaments? What games do you compete in?

I love this mouse.

Comparisons to the MX518 and Deathadder, which currently are the best low-medium sens mice out there IMO. I'm using the eXactMat w/ the Control side. My games of choice are COD4, BF2, UT2K4 Instagib, and a bit of TF2, CSS. I'm a huge fan of browsing in Firefox w/ lots of tabs and 20 or so mouse gestures.

Let's start w/ the cords...

518
It has always gotten in my way. Unless it's bungeed up somewhere, it'll pull the mouse at the worst possible time. The cord will always go back to it's original "straight" form.

Deathadder
Thinner and easier to manage. It never really got in my way and didn't move the mouse. It's nice to forget about the cord, no management was every really necessary.

Ikari
It's thick and it's braided. Does it get any worse?! Thankfully the braid actually "molds" and sits still more often than I thought. I'd rank it up there with the Deathadder in the all important "forget about it and game" factor.

Wheels of mice!!

518
Years ago, it worked great, but eventually it began to move/function in between "clicks." It's annoying browsing forums or picking weapons when the notch doesn't equal a switch. It's always been fairly smooth and quick in Windows and games. The wheel is not high like the G5 and Firefox middle clicks have never been an issue.

Deathadder
Between 3 DA's, I found they like to move between clicks like my beaten 518. That's out of the box! It's also a bit higher than either mice and didn't quite pull off the Firefox middle click as easily as I'd liked. However, it does light up and it makes finding your desk much easier in a drunken FPS DM gaming rage!

Ikari
It's low profile like the 518, clicks easy in Firefox, and notches EXTREMELY well. When moving the mouse down/up, it will not activate until you actually hit the notch. It's also a bit wider w/ a flat top as opposed to the rounder wheels on the DA/518. This makes for a better feel in game than the others. There have been some complaints on a couple reviews about the wheel rubbing up on the side of the mouse, yet the one I received from buy.com has no such issue. Hopefully this is something that's been corrected in retail form.

--after using for awhile longer I've come to the conclusion that not only is the wheel louder when going up rather than going down, but it definitely does rub on the right side if you're wheelin' at an angle. Perhaps a washer could fix this. An annoyance, yes, but it's a killer mouse.

That's all for tonight...episodic mouse impressions FTW!! Seriously tho, I haven't had enough gaming to give a good comparison on surface, feel, and sensor. Although I can say the Ikari tends to disappear after 5 minutes of intense 5+ Shipment FFA, no respawn time in COD4!!

I personally like the DeathAdder better. Maybe it's because I am so used to it, and it just works so well.

Comparisons

DeathAdder vs Ikari

DeathAdder

Pros
• Pulsing logo
• Blue Light
• Mouse Wheel Glows
• Raises my palm so that it doesn't drag on mousepad
• Cord is very easy to manage, Never have a problem with it being in the way
• Side Buttons are big and clicky
• Very Smooth, and accurate
• Glides on my Func like it's on ice
• Great Driver, lots of sensitvity options.
• Decent lift off distance
• Cheaper than Ikari
• Razer builds solid mice

Cons
• Could use more buttons. Like ability to toggle DPI settings easily.
• After using for a while, the sides get sticky
• No place for my pinky, so it rests on the pad creating a bit of drag on the pad

Ikari

Pros
• Fits hand very well, it feels like it's an extension to my hand. Which makes it feel like you're not even holding a mouse
• Has a place to rest pinky
• Side buttons are easily accessible
• Very smooth and accurate
• Solid braided cable - Some mice cords feel flimsly, like they pinch/break easily. No worries here.
• Has LCD screen that tells you what DPI level you're. Very sexy
• DPI buttons on the mouse
• Great lift off distance

Cons
• Not a big enough hump - My palm is too low, so my wrist drags on pad.
• Mouse 4/5 buttons on side, while positioned nicely, they push inside too far. Feels awkward. - using side button to knife in CoD4 is better on DA
• When picking up mouse for some hands, it can be difficult and slip, because of the lip on the right side.
• Does not look as cool as DA, no glowing lights
• More expensive than the adder

Conclusion:
If you already have a DA, it is not worth it to buy a Ikari. The DA performs just as good. If you are trying to choose between which one to get and you're coming from a 518 or the like, I would go with the DA. I think the DA is a closer feel to the mx51x mice. So there would be less adjusting to a new mouse. If you have small hands, the Ikari will probably feel better. If you have big hands, I believe the DA is better.

I personally like the DeathAdder better. Maybe it's because I am so used to it...
Have you purchased/owned the Ikari? I'm not trying to call you out, but your thoughts make it seem as if you've spent less than 20 minutes w/ it...almost as if you didn't really give it a shot for a few days, eh?

Lift off from the eXactMat is...

518
2.5mm

Deathadder
2.0mm

Ikari
1.5mm

All of these are acceptable, but I found lift off on both the DA and Ikari extremely slight. And while the Ikari may have a lower lift off than the DA, that's heavily dependent on the mouse pad. My sessions were done on Razer's eXactMat. I'd love to test out the Destructor, but have been unable to find a purchase site.

Mouse feet/pads!!

518
They are small...but Hyperglides offer a replacement set that alleviate the issue. After installing those the mouse glides better, yet the smaller footprint still keeps the mouse from being completely stable. There are times when I wind up slipping.

Deathadder
There are 3 pads on the DA and the Hyperglides do offer an improvement in friction reduction compared w/ the stock pads. It's a very SMOOTH experience.

Ikari
There are 4 pads and each is 3x the size of the other mice. At first I was concerned because it seemed as though they were worn down, but the largest part is still 2x the size of the other mice. After a couple days of mousing the Ikari has the stability factor in the bag. It's completely balanced, it does not falter. They are larger and that's all there is too it.

Speaking of lift-off distance, the Roccat Kone is supposed to be in shops on the 19th (of feb 08), and it has of course the DCU (distance control unit) which cuts the mouse movement off when the mouse is lifted. Otherwise it is similar to the death adder (in dpi), theoretically it should have the best lift-off distance of any mouse, it's something I'm really looking forward to.

How loud is the Ikari when you click any of the buttons?

I know it's an odd question but my DA can be pretty loud.

MX518 vs Ikari click noise/travel

Sorry, I don't have the DA anymore. 518 is going away too. Anyway, here's a short video of the click noise. From what I remember, DA loudest, Ikari, 518. Ikari has slightly more travel and click noise of the 2 primary buttons.

I have a ikari, i like it. The lcd on the bottom is kinda fun to play with. Changing the CPI during gameplay can be helpful and then switching between modes when needed.

Nice bump. It's been quite awhile and I'm still using it. I've actually upgraded to the destructor and the combination is excellent. However, I did notice a few things after some months now.

1. the feet have tore up bad, they def need hyperglides and they'd be perfect
2. if the wheel is pushed a bit too far right, it will rub. A washer would probably fix it, but the middle mouse button is easier to click (you can activate it by pushing to the left).
3. The grip is fantastic. This is the most comfortable, "sweat-free" rat I've ever had the pleasure of forgetting what I'm using.

What game to you play? High or low sens? Those sniper league?

It finally kicked it. It's been dying for a short while now and I've just submitted for an RMA. There were several problems and some of which may not be fixed on return, but they do say a "new" product will be sent if the device merits replacement.

...what i sent...
Description of the problem: The mouse is no longer recognized. When plugging in after not using for some time, it will work for a short while. Also, when bringing the mouse down after a 180, any/all top 3 buttons activate (primary, secondary, mouse wheel button). Also, the mouse feet deteriorated to the point of annoyance while making slow movements within a matter of days and the wheel rubs up against the right side when depressed hard.

Comments: The mouse can be difficult to pick up until you have sweaty hands. Perhaps a ridge on the side where the pinky is at would fix this.

If the feet get fixed, this could be another 3yr mouse like the MX518. The precision and grip of the Ikari Laser and Destructor mouse have been highly entertaining for this mostly low sens gamer (1111/711 DPI in COD4) and I can't wait to get it back. :D

I see. I like the DA + destructor. Been using it ever since the start of may. However, I do have mild sweaty hands and the sides of the da gets sticky after a while. Also, the buttons feels cheep and loud though I like the amount of pressure needed and the depth I can press it to. As for the scroll wheel, it was too smooth intitially but after the greese settled down, it became noisy. Some complain about it being too big but it's not a problem for me. The feel I absolutly love is the rubber finish. I can spend hours molesting it.

I've yet to hear anything from SS. I'll be on the horn tomorrow...ugh.

i just ordered the ikari, hopefully this mouse will be da bomb like the reviews say:D

MS Intellimouse 3.0 > all.

I agree but the death adder, Ikari and mx518 are still great mice. I just prefer the shape and feel of the 3.0, as well as the lack of prediction even if the others perform better in esreality's mouse roundup.

I had the Ikari laser for 6 months, and in the last month the wheel started to have some problems (sometimes when i scrolled down, it will go up one line and then down again, very annoying). Last week the cord has broken, as the mouse turned itself off when i moved the cord. It was under warranty, so i got a new one. I hope this one will last a lot more then the first, because otherwise it's a great mouse.

Btw, before i've send it to the shop, i've opened it to look inside and took some pictures, if anyone is interested. :)

I'm very pick with mice ( I've tried the Mx510, G3, G5, G9, Copperhead, Lachesis, Diamondback, IME 3.0, and DeathAdder) but I must say that this mouse has the best shape for my hands. It is like a glove!

I game @ 400cpi and this mouse is pure bliss. I miss the DeathAdder sensor though, I'm always paranoid I'll hit the max m/s with this laser mouse. It just feels so nice that I can never go back!
