I came across someone with these on craiglist and he;s asking for 1000s for them, there is very little info on these things online, anyone know what makes them so expensive?

Go look at their website. This is for systems "outside the enterprise" space. In other words, military, ATM machine, etc. Maybe for those customers, these drives have real benefits to justify the higher price. For you, probably not. :D
 
I use STEC SSDs, not the mach8 but the maxiops. they are excellent drives that are worth every penny. however, if you are not buying/building for enterprise/data center you're buying the wrong drives.
 
We still have some old Mach8's, but we use mostly the Mach8IOPS (Storage) and SAS ZeusRAM models (ARC) in very-high-write database applications. Costs an arm and a leg but worth every penny for what they do.
