Steam Sets New Concurrent User Record

Gotta love it. I've even starting going out of my way to buy older multi-platform games like Tomb Raider, SFxTekken, Alan Wake, etc. on Steam just so I can ditch my older consoles for good.

True dat. I'm guilty of doing that this year as the holiday sales of getting multiple games for $5-$10 each, or as a pack.....why the hell not.

Whats pretty sad though is League of Legends gets 5 Million Concurrent players regularly, and thats just a single game.

The sad part is League of Legends is such a shitty game, yet people willingly play it when there are much better alternatives out there in the same genre.

I actually think that Steam is getting DoSed, they are just handling it better. The performance hasn't been up to its normal level recently. I wish law enforcement wasn't so woefully incompetent when it came to handling this sort of thing. You'd think they'd be able to catch a few script kiddies fairly easily. It's not as if they aren't leaving tracks everywhere.

You know, these records are pointless because if you consider iOS and Android as a gaming platform there are probably 50+ million people playing some game at any given time. I also think a lot of people just have steam on and dont actually play games.

Pinterest and Facebook are not games.

Unless all developers put code in place to tell a master server, hey i'm playing a game. How would you tell?

On the PSN side, I guess it's hard to track down where 1.2Tb/s of data is coming from?

Origin was down this weekend for me. I don't like it, but my copy of BF4 is through them. GO PC!

Glad I could add to those numbers, Was playing Dirt3, Skyrim, and Rocksmith 2014 over the weekend. Bought these games during the sale. I'm sure those record numbers are because of people (like me) playing their new games.

Sour grapes.

It's not that simple, as the data is not coming from one place. A lot of people have infected computers which turns them into zombies to participate in these attacks. I'd be guessing even some users here were unaware contributers.

Well, obviously it's not coming from a *single* source, but you can certainly pick out the outliers, and block those IPs. If two or three IPs are hitting me for 100Mb/s, I can make a reasonable assumption that they are part of the DDOS, and block the entire /24.

I like the idea of ISPs blocking infected computers until they are cleaned. Most people are ignorant of what a zombie PC is and have no clue that they are part of the problem. If PSN blocked the whole /24 then I'm pretty sure the ISPs would get involved and disconnect/throttle/send notice to those infected and participating (granted most unwillining) in this sort of attack.

Steam rocks, and it's not a pay for network service like MicroSlop.

Does pretty damn good for free!

Lizard did attack Steam and Blizzard a few months back with less damage than PSN and Xbox Live. There are methods to fight DDoS attacks. If you plan ahead and anticipate there's going to be an attack then you can patch and secure certain areas of the network. And to be fair, Lizard Squad did warn in advance they were going to attack.

But ISPs play a huge role in this and both Microsoft and Sony could work with them to minimize the attack. I know Blizzard does this very often.

i haven't been following it recently, but am curious, how is steam os doing these days?

How many people log into facebook and do not do anything, or install X game and have it set in their phone to send reminders, but do not actual play. Most apps and games on mobile run 24/7 unless you turn it off.

See what i did there.

People don't download and install Steam just to have another application installed and not use it.

It isn't 2-3 IP's.... it is hundreds of thousands, possibly millions.

Example, a DDoS Prolexic recently stopped for us hit us with 31Gig of bandwidth, and had 4.2million packet per second...

So your looking at likely over 1 million source addresses at least...

And pending on the attack, it can look like legit traffic... 100Mb/s isnt alot of bandwidth and could be legit...

There is nothing the end user can do with attacks this large, nothing you can secure or do,MS and Sony, yes, get proper mitigation, that is all they can do. I am sure even Sony and MS do not have 1TB links coming into their main data centers.

This is the issue, these guys hit Key locations and bring them down, so all the geoip shit in the world didnt help MS and Sony because they likley didn't have things set up well enough to handle an attack this large at at given location.

The PC is the best platform ever.

I'd agree if this were like 2001 and PCs were larger, but with a lot of them becoming laptops, tablets, all-in-ones, or just smaller than paperback books because they're the size of an Intel NUC, they just aren't very good at holding up stacks of things, propping open doors, or supporting even smaller people like me who are standing on them to reach things on the top pantry shelf.

Again, this is obvious. I was trying to simplify it. And yes, if some is hitting a gaming service UPSTREAM with 100Mb/s of traffic, something fishy is going on.

I'm sure they have an average amount of traffic being sent or received, and anything over that could be filtered down, and blocked.

Not what I am talking about. Im talking about iOS game center and Google's equivalent, I am sure you can find at least 50 million people on each playing some time of game at any time. I leave my steam on to chat with friends but I havent actually played any games on steam in a year. I know plenty other likes me. But like I said stats like these are pointless.

He realizes his defeat in arguing for consoles against PCs ... so he changes gears and switches to anything running iOS, Android, and Windows Phone until PC goes extinct. :D

Oh I'm arguing for consoles now? I play more on my PC than I do anywhere else, its my system of choice. I am just stating my observations, I havent played my PS4 in 10 months and my xbox one in a year, I am anything but a console fanboy.

Do they count active gamers or just those who are logged into Steam? When my PC boots up, it logs into Steam but as a %age, I'm not actively using Steam that much.

Also, it cracks me up when I hear these gaming records set around Christmas. Let's all go home to see family ... and then play video games! :p

As a linux user I haven't given SteamOS any attention. I just use Steam on Mint 17.1. Steam works great in linux, it's just that Steam is only one aspect of PC gaming. EA's Origin is nowhere to be found, and I doubt they'll care enough to port older games if Origin ever makes it to Linux. Majority of games will be Indie.

Blizzard is another one. They support Mac but make no effort to release their games on Linux? Not that I play any of their games but common, they can use Mac to port their games over.

Wine still sucks. Gallium-Nine was the best thing that happened to Wine and it still sucks. Can't even play Mass Effect through Origin. Game needs an update and it wont apply it. Deadpool just doesn't work, even though other people got it to work and won't tell me how. Getting games to work on Wine is like asking for secrets.

Delayed and pushed back unfortunately, though it's not to surprising considering the magnitude of the project. It's giving time for MS to roll windows 10 out to fix the pileup that 8 was. I know Gauntlet for Linux was delayed till SteamOS shipped, and I was all ready to snap it up for from the winter steam sale till I found that out. :-(

Whatever. This Steam sale is the lamest shit ever. Construction Simulator and Farming Simulator are currently some of the featured deals. Really?

I got lots of good games so far for cheap, mostly games for my steambox.

Bully
Darksiders
Endless Legend
The Evil Within
Injustice
Never Alone
Outlast
Slender

Just to name a few.

Just those that are signed into the client. Valve is on record stating that they have no clue how many "real" users are online due to the default auto-login on the Stem client, as you alluded to.

There were 20 million (!) accounts created in the days following the Steam Family Sharing announcement. Plus the millions of Russian bot accounts that seem to grow every day. Seriously, check out the SteamOS group. Thousands upon thousands of Russian spam comments and links to malicious, account-stealing files - wait, actually don't do that.

The number of actual users is much, much lower than what it seems.

You forgot about the main one: Goat Simulator! :D

I recently came across about Russian spammers attacking Steam. That really does suck. Yeah, so of all these millions that are "signed in", I wonder how many of them are actually gaming. I'm guessing somewhere between 10-25%. I personally am around 10% gaming of the time I'm actually signed in.
