I downloaded and installed the latest version of Steam and am trying to install HalfLife 2 but I keep getting the following error :

"There is not enough free disk space to run Steam."

143/250gb
Did uninstall and reinstall. Still a no-go.
Gonna reboot (never think about doing that)... edit : Nope didn't help...

Any help/

Defrag your drive. Weird though as you have plenty of room.

What is steam and why is it important to sign up? I got an ATI videocard and it has steam with it and they want me to sign up for it? What is STEAM?

Tried that but still no luck... :( I have it auto-defrag on Wednesday nights anyway but gave it another shot. Please help COD4 is near...!

Its basically Valves portal. Similar to Xbox LIVE.

Steam is a platform that Valve uses to distribute games. It is also used as a game launcher for HL2 and the Valve family of games, and a few others. People have a love/hate relationship with it.

Do you have more than one drive? Are you sure Steam is actually putting data on the one with 143GB free?

Steam is a bunch of things - in short, it's Valve's online game platform. It provides a central point for copy-protection/authentication, updates, server browsing, cross-game chat. They've also got a pretty good online store with digital delivery (surprisingly convenient).

Your ATI card probably came with some free games which you'd get access to through steam - my x800 gave me Halflife 2: Deathmatch and Halflife 2: Lost Coast (a level from the middle of HL2 that was revamped to show off some new graphical effects that got added to the game engine).

Yeah but the other one has 250/279gb. Damn this is crazy. Is it because of Vista64.

You could try partitioning your drive with free space and drop it in the new partition. See if that works.

What drive is steam trying to put all the HL2 data on? What drive did you install steam on?

Describe your uninstall/reinstall process.

Did you reboot between the two? Did it detect your previous login information (indicating it didn't completely uninstall)?

What I would recommend doing in this case would be:
- Uninstall
- Reboot
- See if there are any 'Steam' directories left on your PC, and look in your registry, too. Delete any you find.
- Teh reb00ts again!
- Download latest version from www.steampowered.com and make another go of it - installing to a slightly different location (IE., if you HAD installed to "c:\games\steam", try something like "c:\games\steampowered" or somesuch). Make sure you are logged on a system administrator.

Not as familiar with Vista as WinXP/Win2K3, but file and folder permissions could well be the cause of this issue. Gods know that, where I work, this is probably the #1 cause of client problems with our software.

I think Steam did something goofy. I was playing HL2 and all the sudden my screen goes black. Once I got out I saw Steam was trying to download an update and it had some weird error that wasn't listed in the support forum anywhere. Couldn't log onto Steam AT ALL!

Ended up have to reinstall Steam and it nuked all my games, etc.! I had to reinstall everything and I have the retail version of Orange box! No saved games, progress or anything were left. Another Steam sucks a big one. LEAVE ME ALONE when I buy a retail copy of something! I don't do online play, I'm single player only.

This is on a fairly clean install as I upgraded my machine a few months ago, so I don't need to defrag.

have you tried just deleting clientregistry.blob in the steam folder and relaunching steam?
