Steam offline mode

There is zero incentive for Valve to fix the spotty Offline Mode. Valve can't spam ads - I mean, news updates - at you every time you sign in and every other time you finish a game with no Internet connection. And now with most non-EA and Ubisoft games using Steamworks as their DRM (such as Activision, 2K, Sega, Square Enix, WB, Rockstar and Bethesda), most gamers are tied to a Steam account whether they like it or not. Therefore, gamers need Steam to be working a lot more than Valve needs to have a marketable, working product.

But lets not let facts get in the way of a good internet rant :p

Well they FINALLY added the option to limit your download speeds so maybe they will finally get around to making offline mode more consistent.

And lets not forget the Offline mode is a joke. Online to go Offline.. Brilliant!

How many times are you going to repeat that, in the same thread no less.

It's a DRM, of course you are required to go online for verification. Every DRM does that.

If you don't like that, you shouldn't be buying any games with DRM in the first place.

I was in the same boat not too long ago and since then I just keep steam in offline mode all the time, letting it go online once a week to check for updates. I'm not really using the steam community and my games are mostly singleplayer or connect to their own networks regardless of steam being online.

It's supposed to be Online to go into Offline if you don't have your Steam stuff saved. If you have your Steam info saved like I do you're supposed to be able to go into Offline mode regardless of having an internet connection at the time that you wish to go Offline. I have my Steam info saved, Steam Guard enabled, etc and it doesn't work. Others have the same issue also, otherwise I would be the only one sharing my experience.

It seems that a lot of people that use Steam's Offline mode and it works perfectly for them think that the rest of us are stupid, and don't know what we're doing. What we're trying to tell you is that Steam is buggy and needs some attention from Valve. It's so frustrating to have so many games in my Steam library and unable to play anything for weeks at a time when for example the yearly hurricane rolls through. Or for 2 days when the rocket scientist tried to steal Cable TV and spliced into my wire rendering my Steam installation DOA.

I'm not mad at anyone that thinks that Steam, Valve, or Gabe Newell are worthy of enshrinement on Mount Rushmore. I like watching Gabe's seminars and have purchased most every Valve game at one time or another. I even bought a ton of other people's games from him over the years. Still doesn't make the fact that some bug in the software keeps me from enjoying my purchases. I didn't spend my hard earned money to be frustrated by buggy DRM. I actually spent it to be entertained by another's hard work. It's to the point where I'm starting to purposely look for alternatives to Steam. It shouldn't be that way.

What I wish was that Valve had a question and answer stream sometimes with their users. Or a meet the customer service team thing where you can field some questions to them and they get back to you at the next event or email. Or maybe sell an authenticator that works for Offline mode. Cellphone authentication to a server and a response that you can type into Steam to enable Offline mode. Or more robust error reporting so users like me can find out what is blocking Steam from going into Offline mode. What if it's my AMD Beta drivers that are blocking it? Give me a hint!

Does this make sense? Or do I need to explain it better so more people understand. Yes, going to add this to my suggestion thread that German_Muscle suggested that I start. Not mad at you Hornet; just frustrated with Steam's DRM.

Also it is annoying that Valve doesn't put more work in it, given the vast amount of money they make. They can't claim "Oh well there's only so much we can afford to do!" They could, literally, double their entire staff and still make profits in the realm of $15,000,000 per employee. They can and should get more people working on making Steam better.

Not everyone knows or uses that feature. It's a statistical fact that Valve will get more game advertising impressions with a broken offline mode vs. a fixed one regardless of whether there is an option to turn ads off or not. Of those who tried unsuccessfully to get offline mode working, many still haven't clicked the checkbox. It's marketing statistics and probability.

I am working in the Middle East and travel to various remote bases. I often go without an internet connection for my computer for several days and have never had an issue with offline mode. It gives me the option to choose offline mode, I choose it, I play the game.

I remember this being an issue when Steam was new, but I haven't had an issue in years.

Ditto. Not sure what all the crying is about, sounds like some people just have an axe to grind
